Product Description

Visually ambitious dark fantasy, the first film to be made entirely using string puppets and marionettes. Young Prince Hal (voiced by James McAvoy) embarks on a perilous quest in order to avenge the murder of his father, the Emperor of Hebalon. As he travels, Hal is shocked to find that the land of Hebalon is not the peaceful, happy realm he had imagined, and that the people, devastated by years of war, rejoice in the news that the Emperor is dead. As Hal grows more bitter and resentful, he eventually finds solace in love and vows to restore the kingdom to the peace and harmony he had always imagined.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly innovative! 28 Dec 2005
By Ben
Format:DVD
I truly think that this movie deserves much more than the 3 stars given by the sole review written so far!

Apart from the artistic "tour de force" performed by the producers (for puppets make quite a refreshing change from the usual 3D special effects - as good as they often are) you can feel that they spent time building Strings' world.

Perfect examples are the City's gate, the jail or the baby's birth, all built around a world made of strings. You simply need to watch the movie to understand that bit.

As for the story in itself, it took me no more than 5 minutes to get into it straight away, totally forgetting that I'm watching puppets whose only way of expression are gesticulating around and closing/openening their eyes.

So anyway, whether you're 10 or 50, I can guarantee you that you'll love this movie!

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant film 31 Oct 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
If, like me, you enjoy off the wall films, then you will enjoy this one. The puppetry is excellent, and it is so easy to follow the story line, and believe in the characters, even though their strings are so obviously visable, and as the title suggests, they are a part of the story

4.0 out of 5 stars A great fantasy film for the new generation! 15 Mar 2006
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Just got this film delivered yesterday, and watched it almost straight away! Personally, I really liked it. I dunno what it is, but there's something cool about seeing such high levels of puppetry! It almost reminds me of those old claymation shorts they used to have on BBC2 (mostly retellings of Shakespear plays, and the like).

Anyway, if you're a fan of high-concept, art fantasy films, I'd throughly recommend this movie. Sure, it'll never replace the likes of Laberynth or Dark Crystal in terms of favoritism, but it should easily be considered up there in terms of storytelling and innovation!

It's a shame that this film has such a relativley small fanbase, as it's truly one of those great movies you'd happily show to your kids, yet at the same time be able to appreciate as an adult.

The fact that the characters know they're essentially puppets, and that it plays a large part into the storyline is an extra added bonus, and helps develop the mythology surrounding the world they inhabit.

Anyway, those with even a passing interest in the concept should buy this now! You won't be disappointed. It's all beautifully shot, and the craftsmanship on display is staggering! The story's enjoyable, and the DVD also contains a 60-minute Making Of Doctumentary (well worth it)!
