Apart from the artistic "tour de force" performed by the producers (for puppets make quite a refreshing change from the usual 3D special effects - as good as they often are) you can feel that they spent time building Strings' world.
Perfect examples are the City's gate, the jail or the baby's birth, all built around a world made of strings. You simply need to watch the movie to understand that bit.
As for the story in itself, it took me no more than 5 minutes to get into it straight away, totally forgetting that I'm watching puppets whose only way of expression are gesticulating around and closing/openening their eyes.
So anyway, whether you're 10 or 50, I can guarantee you that you'll love this movie!
Anyway, if you're a fan of high-concept, art fantasy films, I'd throughly recommend this movie. Sure, it'll never replace the likes of Laberynth or Dark Crystal in terms of favoritism, but it should easily be considered up there in terms of storytelling and innovation!
It's a shame that this film has such a relativley small fanbase, as it's truly one of those great movies you'd happily show to your kids, yet at the same time be able to appreciate as an adult.
The fact that the characters know they're essentially puppets, and that it plays a large part into the storyline is an extra added bonus, and helps develop the mythology surrounding the world they inhabit.
Anyway, those with even a passing interest in the concept should buy this now! You won't be disappointed. It's all beautifully shot, and the craftsmanship on display is staggering! The story's enjoyable, and the DVD also contains a 60-minute Making Of Doctumentary (well worth it)!
