Review

A "super-group" among quartets, with each player an established soloist, the Arcanto Quartet's intonation is faultless, its blend fresh and exciting. --Anna Picard, Independent on Sunday, 5 September 2010

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational recording from the Arcanto Quartet 10 Jan 2012
Format:Audio CD
So here we have yet another recording of the Debussy and Ravel string quartets. Question is - do we really need another one to add to the already huge discography for these two seminal works? Well, in this case I would say yes without a shadow of doubt.

For a start the Arcanto Quartet treats the listener to a masterly account of Dutilleux's haunting 'Ainsi la nuit' (Thus at night), the composer's only work for string quartet, in addition to the Debussy and Ravel. Secondly, the sheer range of colour, sonority, dynamic nuance and style that emanate from the four players on this disc is truly astonishing - I thought I'd heard some wonderful recordings of these pieces before this one, such as the classic accounts by the Quartetto Italiano, Alban Berg Quartet and more recent ones by the Emerson and Belcea quartets, but this one is even more impressive in my opinion simply due to the consummate musicianship on display.

With the Debussy Quartet we can sense that each player is completely locked in to the style of this music - moving from streamlined, half-lit sonorities to a rich, full-bodied sound with natural ease. The performance as a whole has just the right amount of forward momentum and although the interpretation is not as romantic and sensuous as some might like it, there are still plenty of beautiful moments to savour. Everything is very well proportioned and nothing is done to disrupt the flow of the musical line. For some the Arcanto's reading of the slow movement might prove a bit too impatient - but they still manage to make it sound spacious despite the more the flowing tempo and are constantly alive to the delicacy and sensitivity of the scoring.
