The Belcea Quartet are truly excellent in the six Bartok String Quartets. Precise, but not too much so (as with the Emersons, whose DG recording is, alas, over-rated in my opinion), but with a hefty dose of local flavour.

Having said that, there are many superlative sets of these works, works which repay repeated hearings as well as anything, and are on a level with the Beethoven quartets. Alternative recordings equally worth considering include the Tokyo (DG), the Takacs (Decca, but also their earlier Hungaroton recording, albeit with a different line-up), the Vegh (Naive), the Keller (Warner), and the Vermeer (Naxos).

This cycle is up there with the very best, and I say this despite having approached it with a foolish prejudice, that such a young group couldn't get to the very heart of this great music. How wrong one can be!

This is a superb recording, my only problems are minor and nothing to do with music - I'm having problems using the EMI Classics club, I don't agree with the layout (Quartets 1, 3, and 5 on CD 1 and 2, 4, and 6 on CD 2) and the printing on the CD box was smeary.

Bartok: String Quartets 1-6 8 Mar 2012
By Bjorn Viberg - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Bartok: String Quartets 1-6 is a 2008 EMI Records Ltd. recording starring the Belcea Quartet. Having listened to Emerson String Quartets recording prior to this one, I must say that the former is better. The playing is good but the passion is lacking. The playing style is a bit lackadascial and could use some more passion for the music. Rob Cowan has written extensive and interesting music notes. Far from a bad recording but not a top notch one either. A well deserved four out of five. 4/5.

Bartok at it's Best 2 Dec 2010
By W. Clark - Published on Amazon.com
These are stunning performances. They easily rank with the energy of the Emerson set, and also have the warmth of the Takacs reading. I'm glad that at 57 I've come to truly enjoy these works. They talk about a lot of experiences that come with survival, experience and wisdom. I'm always surprised by people that say they enjoyed these works immensely while still at a very young age (e.g. college age). I can't say that I had the background and maturity at 18 years old to really absorb these incredible works by Bartok. I was still too busy, learning, growing up, and unfortunately being too self absorbed to be ready for this material. My hat is off to those who claim that they did have that level of maturity at 17 and 18 years old. Enjoy this recording. It is worth every penny and about a thousand times more.

Okay, but you can do better. 20 July 2008
By Steven Schwartz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The Belcea has done some good Haydn and Mozart, but I feel they are overmatched in the Bartoks. Both violinists lack the weight of tone these quartets demand, and I find the ensemble seriously clueless in the first, fifth, and sixth quartets. I still haven't lost affection for my first set, the Juilliard on Sony, but for a pretty much definitive set, I'd go with the Takacs on Decca.
