Elgar was inspired by the example of Beethoven to turn to chamber music at the end of his great productive period; all three works date from around 1918, with the quintet being a genuine masterpiece of the genre. All are pervaded with a certain hazy autumnal sadness (especially the slow movement of the quartet) brought on by the final days of the war, though the quintet rallies to a powerfully triumphant conclusion. None have had a surplus of recordings, as it very difficult to capture the mood of these pieces.
