Amazon.co.uk Review

Even as Net traffic soars, a general feeling persists that nobody--save computer and sex sites and a few other big-time exceptions--is really making money online. Hogwash, proclaims Los Angeles Times columnist Jaclyn Easton. She began tracking successful smaller Web enterprises back in 1995, and in her new book does an excellent job of putting this profit-myth to rest by revealing exactly how nearly two dozen mom-and-pop cyberventures are racking up "significant revenues" right now.

StrikingItRich.Com: Profiles of 23 Incredibly Successful Websites That You've Probably Never Heard Of offers the best in-depth examination yet available of what makes such winners tick. Following a foreword by Amazon.com founder and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos, Easton presents highly detailed portraits of a diverse collection of sites with little in common except for one crucial ingredient in her bottom-line recipe for online prosperity: "Be the first, be the best, or be different." Exactly how sites like iPrint, Horsenet, The Knot and Ask the Builder achieve this, of course, is as different as the cyberproducts they're peddling. Precise information on site creation, content development, revenue streams, promotional programs, and other operational aspects make this an extremely practical and motivational read. --Howard Rothman, Amazon.com

Product Description

This text provides an insight into 23 of the most successful Web ventures. The companies selected cover four types of Web-retailing: a physical store that created a Web component; a catalogue moved onto the Web; a business that has only existed online; and business-to-business success.

This review is from: Striking it Rich.com: Profiles of 23 Incredibly Successful Web Sites You've Probably Never Heard of (Hardcover)
Practical experience is always at the cutting edge of discovering the truth about any activity. This book is "from the horses mouth". The conversations with the owners of these successful web stores are fascinating and their experiences and insight contribute to building models of Internet trading that will prove invaluable to the researcher and entrepreneur alike. The book is very well researched and is interesting as well as informative. Essential and indispensable reading material .

4.0 out of 5 stars A great how-it-was-done book quoting real-life examples, 24 Mar 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Striking it Rich.com: Profiles of 23 Incredibly Successful Web Sites You've Probably Never Heard of (Hardcover)
So many books quote the theory, rather than true examples. This is a great read for anyone interested in making money from the Internet. It's not suitable for larger businesses looking for a way into e-commerce and shouldn't really be viewed as such. As a motivational reminder of what can be achieved without a massive up-front investment though, this is a good book. It's also a good reminder to web developers that to make money, you really don't need flash technology and animated gifs! Read this and THEN choose your web designer :)

5.0 out of 5 stars More Useful than a " How To " E - Commerce book, 8 Mar 2002
By
Emile AULD (Manchester) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As we all know, there are about a zillion different books offering advice on " How To - start/build/grow etc. etc. an E - Commerce business ". Some are very good, some not.
Where this book scores, is that it is very easy to digest the bite sized profiles of each business.
Obviously, if you're profiling this many businesses, you will sacrifice some of the detail.
However Ms. Easton has chosen a very interesting selection of businesses to look at, and the details she does give you, are the ones you probably needed to know.
The way she categorises the businesses at the start of the book has proved very useful.
It is written more from a Business perspective, than a Technical one, which is no bad thing.
She also covered which advertising strategies proved successful , and which did not, which was definitely worth knowing.
You will find this book easy to read, and the it has given me a lot of ideas, that could be applied to starting an Internet operation.
