Product Description

Strigoi is a vampire movie that defies categorisation. Shedding a fantastic light on a post-communist Romanian village, it introduces us to an ancient myth: Strigoi, the souls that rise again after death to seek justice if they've been wronged, their appetites intensified by a hunger for blood. Vlad Cozma (Catalin Paraschiv) is a young man returning to his grandfather's village from Italy, with barely a foot through the front door Vlad dives head first into investigating a mysterious death that raises questions about land ownership in the community. The trail points to ex-communist bully Constantin Tirescu (Constantin Barbulescu) and his wife, but when Vlad confronts them, he discovers that the richest landowners in the village have become real bloodsuckers. Full of unpredictable twists and turns, brimming with black humour and drenched in Romanian folklore Strigoi is a 'nihilistic and bitingly funny film akin to discovering a beautiful black rose blooming in an (un)dying, over killed film genre'. SPECIAL FEATURES: - Dolby Digital 5.1 Audio, - Lump - a short film by Faye Jackson, - Trailer, - Subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing

5.0 out of 5 stars He's not sick. He's dead. 26 Aug 2011

Currently pop culture is in the middle of a vampire craze, especially if those vampires are sexy. But long ago, vampires were anything but sexy -- they were strigoi.

And those are the kind of vampires that keep popping up in "Strigoi: The Undead," a tongue-in-cheek horror/comedy that takes us right back to the origins of vampire myth. Director Faye Jackson weaves together Romanian folklore with a murder plot and lots of dodgy land papers, as well as a heavy dose of morbid humor.

A young almost-doctor named Vlad (Catalin Paraschiv) returns home to the village of Podoleni, to stay with his slightly-crazy grandfather. He soon discovers that the town drunk Florin is dead, and it looks like someone strangled him. But for some reason, everybody in the town claims it was an accident, and most of them have fine new appliances and clothes. Even the priest is close-lipped about it.

Vlad also drops in to ask greedy land-owner Constantin (Constantin Barbulescu) about it... only to find that Constantin and his wife are flushed, growling and ravenously hungry.

Vlad keeps investigating the conspiracy, which seems to involve post-Communism land deals, forgery and corruption. But he doesn't know that bodies are being found drained of blood, and that the village's conspiracy of silence has led to the strigoi's presence. If the killing (and fridge-emptying) is going to stop, Vlad will have to do something himself.

"Strigoi: The Undead" is an odd sort of movie -- it's equal parts gory horror, murder mystery and coming-home-to-find-yourself indie comedy. But the film's real charm is in Faye Jackson's depiction of a traditional Romanian village in the modern age -- think Vlad sauntering forth to slay vampires, while chatting on a cell phone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not your usual vampire fare 31 Aug 2011

This is an unusual film, I wouldn't describe it as a vampire movie but it is definitely a strigoi movie. There are different sorts of strigoi in Romanian folklore and they are not necessarily vampires as shown in this film. Neither are they all dead/undead. You won't see any fangs although the hero does check for them in one scene and the strigoi only seem to drink blood when the food runs out. What you get for your money is a weird but strangely fascinating black comedy performed in a completely deadpan style set in a real village in Romania. Its hard to think of another film to compare it to but don't bother watching it if your bent is American style comedy or action films as you probbaly just won't get it.

2.0 out of 5 stars dont bother 10 Oct 2011

This looked good so I was gutted. The main problem is the actors should have been subtitled but they spoke English, not their first language, so it felt as though they were unable to convey what they were saying with any conviction.
The plot ,complicated as it was became even harder to follow. Some nice shots of Romania though. Also the soundtrack was by Beirut, who I really like ,he touches on a balkan vibe but its not Romanian.Romania has so much really fantastic music so that seemed a bit lazy,as though the film maker didnt look into the culture. The joke about all moving to Italy was a little overplayed to the extent that it felt like pandering to a stereo-type.If you want a Romania comedy with black humour I suggest 'tales from a golden age'.If your after a look at Romanian life by an English director I highly recomend Katalin Varga , brilliant.Katalin Varga [DVD] (2009)Tales From The Golden Age [DVD] [2009]
