I bought this book some years ago and have found it invaluable. Beautifully produced, it is easy and inspiring to use. Firstly, it makes the yoga postures easy to understand by creating a category for each basic group - sideways, forward etc. It then shows you a range of postures for each group, from beginner to more advanced positions. It also provides a series of short, simple routines for readers to practise. This means that if you are very stiff, elderly or whatever, you can still do a routine, which might involve using a chair for example. It also provides routines for getting to sleep, stress, after travelling and also pre and post natal programmes. Finally, as someone who finds non-European languages really hard to remember it helped me in that it gives the postures simplified names as well as the original Sanskrit ones. Perhaps no book is a substitute for a good teacher, but I think that people new to yoga would find this really useful nonetheless.

I had seen this book for sale when it was newly published but couldn't afford it at the time. I had remembered the title all these years and decided to google it recently. At last a copy is mine and it did not disappoint...a no nonsense 'yoga' book for people who may be put off by 'yoga' in the title when all they really want is some straightforward ideas for a bit of a relaxing stretch!
Actually I've been practising yoga for 36 years now but this book is still motivational....Lovely!

EXCELLENT FOR ALL LEVELS OF YOGA 5 April 2004
By Margot Harris - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book was originally published in England. My husband and I were fortunate enough to attend a couple of years of classes with Terry Tobias (the author's husband and also a yoga instructor). I should mention that I am overweight and out of shape. I've taken other yoga classes since then, and this beautifully illustrated book fills a real need in showing all aspects of various postures - and takes each one through the variations from less stretch (basic, easy) to more advanced. The attention to detail on positioning, breathing, relaxation and body structure is excellent. The focus of the book is on Yoga for stretching, suppleness, stamina, strength, relaxation and toning, but specific sections also address relieving stiffness (including backache), relieving stress (including emotional), and even having a baby. The book is like having an instructor at your side giving you individual instruction. I should also mention this book is written for Western-oriented audiences. Although the authors have studied in India, this book, while discussing energization and relaxation techniques, does NOT address Yoga philosophy per se.

Most helpful resource on stretching I've found. Pain Relief! 23 April 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I've found it more helpful in dealing with my lower back problems than hundreds of dollars worth of physical therapy. I gave my copy to a friend, and only then discovered that it's out of print. What a great loss! I've been trying to get a copy for a few years now.
