Product Description

Product Description

The controlled stretching of muscles has been an integral part of the training of human athletes for many years. Scientific studies, and results in the field, have proved the value of stretch exercises in improving performance and guarding against injury. Human therapist and equestrian trainer Karin Blignault, shows how the principles long applied to human athletes can be used for the considerable benefit of horses and the enhancement of their performance, across the whole range of equestrian sport. Karin explains the role of stretch exercises in preventing injury, alleviating pain and improving performance, the need to develop suppleness in tandem with strength, and the part played by the classical ridden movements in the gymnastic development of the horse. After discussing the basic anatomy and physiology of muscles and how they work together in specific groups, Karin describes a number of mounted and dismounted exercises which benefit specific groups of muscles and explains how each exercise should be performed. "Stretch Exercises for your Horse" should be of interest to all owners and trainers of sport horses, and all those who wish to contribute to the constructive development of the horses they ride.

About the Author

Karin Blignault started riding in her early twenties and had competition success in showjumping, horse trials and dressage. She competes in high level dressage, teaches riding and participates in equestrian seminars. Having studied occupational therapy. Karin took a diploma in the education of children with learning difficulties and then studied neuro-developmental therapy. Following this she went on to lecture on the development of visual perception and learning theory. Karin became increasingly aware of the parallels between communication techniques and the facilitation of movement in disabled children, and the key concepts of classical equitation. Further exploration of these parallels, in which she combined her knowledge of anatomy and neurology with her equestrian expertise, led to her writing the highly acclaimed Successful Schooling - Train Successful Schooling - Train Your Horse with Empathy. Now, further combining her skills with the latest specialist research, she has produced Stretch Exercises for Your Horse.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic find!, 15 Feb 2008

This review is from: Stretch Exercises for Your Horse (Spiral-bound)
I love Karin Blignault's ideas but i really wish that ihad found this one sooner. Having had my horse for 13years, i was concerned that he was losing his flexibility now he's 20 (a fit 20!) Also when he was 17 i loaned him out for a few months and he got injured and i have had problems with the strength of one of his hind legs since. This book has saved me loads of money on horse osteopaths as since i have been doing these stretches about x4 a week, his flexibility has improved greatly and all his tight muscles over his back, that have plagued him since i have had him and throughout his eventing career, have gone.

Easy to read, excellent pictures. A must have!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book, 22 Dec 2011
This review is from: Stretch Exercises for Your Horse (Spiral-bound)
A good, apparently comprehensive book with plenty of stretching exercises. Some useful practical tips and clear explanations. Most exercises described were ground-work based but there was also descriptions of how lateral work helps your horse stretch and advice regarding which movements were best for encouraging stretching in particular areas.
