Book Description

8 Jan 2009
From the author of the long-running number 1 bestseller "StrengthsFinder 2.0" comes a landmark study of great leaders, teams, and the reasons why people follow. Nearly a decade ago, Gallup unveiled the results of a landmark 30-year research project that ignited a global conversation on the topic of strengths. More than 3 million people have since taken Gallup's StrengthsFinder assessment, which forms the core of several books on this topic, including the number 1 international bestseller "StrengthsFinder 2.0." In recent years, while continuing to learn more about strengths, Gallup scientists have also been poring over decades of data on the topic of leadership. They surveyed a million work teams, conducted more than 50,000 in-depth interviews with leaders, and even interviewed 20,000 followers around the world to ask exactly why they followed the most important leader in their life.In "Strengths Based Leadership", bestselling author Tom Rath and renowned leadership consultant Barry Conchie reveal the results of this research. Based on their discoveries, the book identifies three keys to being a more effective leader: knowing your strengths, getting the right talents on your team, and meeting the four basic needs of those who look to you for leadership. As you read "Strengths Based Leadership", you'll hear firsthand accounts from some of the most successful organizational leaders in recent history as they discuss how their unique talents have driven their success. To help you apply your own talents, you'll have the opportunity to take a special version of "Gallup's StrengthsFinder" that will provide you with specific strategies for leading with each of your Top 5 talents. The new version of the assessment will also enable you to plot the talents of your team based on the four domains of leadership talent revealed in the book. Loaded with novel research, stories, and actionable ideas, "Strengths Based Leadership" will give you a new roadmap for leading people toward a better future. A unique access code (enclosed in the back of this book) allows you to take a new leadership version of Gallup's StrengthsFinder program. The new version of this program provides you with specific strategies for leading with your top five strengths and enables you to plot the strengths of your team based on the four domains of leadership strength revealed in the book

This is the latest in a series of books whose authors discuss portions of the wealth of research data that The Gallup Organization has accumulated during the last several decades. They include Donald Clifton and Paula Nelson's Soar With Your Strengths (1996), Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman's First, Break All the Rules: What the World's Great Managers Do Differently (1999) and its sequel, Now, Discover Your Strengths (2001), Coffman and Gabriel Gonzalez-Molina's Follow This Path: How the World's Greatest Organizations Drive Growth by Unleashing Human Potential (2002), co-authored by Marcus Buckingham and Clifton, 12: The Elements of Great Managing, co-authored by Rodd Wagner & James K. Harter (2006), Buckingham's The One Thing You Need to Know... About Great Managing, Great Leading, and Sustained Individual Success (2005), Tom Rath and Clifton's How Full Is Your Bucket? Positive Strategies for Work and Life (2005), Rath's Vital Friends: The People You Can't Afford to Live Without (2006) and StrengthsFinder 2.0 (2007), Jon Fleming and Jim Asplund's Human Sigma: Managing the Employee-Customer Encounter (2007), and The Best of the Gallup Management Journal 2001-2007 co-edited by Geoff Brewer and Barb Sanford (2007). I highly recommend all of these books.

What we have in Strengths Based Leadership is Tom Rath and Barry Conchie's rigorous analysis of research that reveals at least some of the keys to becoming a more effective leader. The data includes more than 20,000 in-depth interviews with senior leaders, studies of more than one million work teams, and 50 years of Gallup Polls about the world's most admired leaders. Rath, Conchie, and their 28 research associates then initiated a study of more than1,000 followers throughout the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Two out of three right? 28 Feb 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
An interesting and thought-provoking read. I'd recommend the book itself, but I'm not entirely convinced by the online test - of the top three strengths it claimed for me, two made sense and one was totally mystifying - absolutely not an attribute that I think I am strong on (or at least nowhere near as strong as some of the others that it didn't pick). I speculate that too many of my answers were neutral (which was how I answered if I really couldn't pick one of the two options provided over the other). However, there is no chance to go back and retake the test in order to find out. If this is the case, it needs better instructions up front as to how to deal with questions where you agree equally with both. And the report it provides based on the test is no more illuminating than reading the book. So, read the book, consider what your strengths are & how best to use them, but don't expect too much more enlightenment from the online test.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gallup's heavily researched report on leadership 29 April 2011
By Rolf Dobelli TOP 500 REVIEWER
This useful leadership book supports its advice, guidelines and recommendations with solid research. Gallup Inc., the well-known polling company, has done far more research on leadership and the social sciences than any author could do alone. Here, Gallup executives Tom Rath - already a best-selling author - and Barry Conchie extrapolate significant findings on leadership from their company's mountain of research. They explain what superior leadership requires and what a leader's followers seek. Their book comes with unique access codes to leadership strength assessment. In a world of mixed opinion and amorphous authority, getAbstract recommends this empirical approach to understanding leadership by way of reliable data.

Recommended by my boss, and enables you to focus on what you are good at rather than improving your weaknesses. A pleasant change to management books!
