Product Description

The message of Ezekiel is one of God's faithfulness to his covenant, both in carrying out judgement on sin and in the restoration and blessing of a remnant through the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. The prophet's final vision looks forward to days of great blessing, encompassing not only the restoration from exile, but the blessings of the new convenant and the final glory of heaven.

Ezekiel has a reputation as one of the difficult and hard to understand books of the Bible. Even the great Theologian of the Reformation John Calvin claimed that he found it hard to understand the initial vision at the start of the book (that said, he produced a very useful commentary on the first part of the book). However, Derek Thomas making use of todays greater knowledge of the culture, both Jewish and Babylonian, of that time opens up the book and gives us insight into even the strangest parts and visions of the book including particularly useful insight into the new Temple which takes up so much that the last part of the book by looking at what's its role and is it literal or is it figurative? When I was part of the 'Keswick at home' conference a few years ago this was one of the commentaries that I found incredibly helpful (the best was the NIV application commentary which you can find reviewed by me elsewhere). Ultimately, despite some of God's people being in exile and those remaining in the nation still facing God's judgement, Ezekiel is an encouraging book. It shows that however far God's people had moved from him, he never gives up on them and was still seeking to repair the relationship between him and his people even when they had violated his original covenant. Here we see a picture of a God who will go to extreme lengths to enter into a new covenant with his people, despite their unfaithfulness. As such, the theme of grace is well illustrated in Ezekiel as it shows God as initiating his people spiritual return to him. This is a theme that has obvious New Testament parallels as found in the life and work of Jesus Christ!

Great book 8 Oct. 2013

I purchased this book because I'm naming my son Ezekiel. I know very little about the prophet but love the name. I really appreciate Dr. Thomas' explanation. It is accessible for the non-bible-scholar. I feel like I know a lot more about Ezekiel and am able to better appreciate the scripture. Each chapter summary contains lessons that can be applied to everyday life. I wasn't sure about paying for a paperback but this is well worth is.
