Product Description

BBC Review

It's an age old rock 'n' roll story but one that's set to be repeated again and again. Tired and exhausted from yet another gruelling U.S. tour that topped a seven-year campaign of recording and extensive gigging, Kippax quartet, The Music, found themselves burnt out, and utterly despondent. Worse still, here was a band that couldn't stand the sight of each other. Studio sessions ground to halt while their label - no longer returning their calls - quietly dropped them. Under normal circumstances, the stock response of most bands would be to split up, but clearly, The Music are made of sterner stuff. Despite a four-year gap since the release of Welcome To The North and the domination of neighbours Kaiser Chiefs and The Pigeon Detectives - not to mention the appearance of any number of dance-based outfits - The Music's third album finds the band fighting back by venturing deep into electronic territory.

Aided and abetted by former Orbital mainstay Paul Hartnoll along with P.J.Harvey and Depeche Mode knob twiddler Flood, Strength In Numbers is The Music's strongest set yet. From the opening pulses of the title track, the band's move to new pastures is abundantly apparent. Drugs encapsulates their new found direction thanks largely to the production team's guiding hand but it's really on the pumping guitar-dance fusion of The Spike And The Left Side where The Music's huge slabs of six-string wig out coalesce with the mammoth beats beneath them.

Wisely, the band have reined in their more meandering tendencies. Here they offer concise blasts of bass-heavy grooves and widescreen fret worrying, while Robert Harvey's nasal call-to-arms remains firmly and reassuringly in place. Having conquered their own internal battles, the remaining challenge is how The Music will now set about re-establishing themselves after such a lengthy absence. They may be taking the long road, but with Strength In Numbers they've started walking it. --Julian Marszalek

Strength 22 Jun 2008

The Music have really stepped up their songwriting on this album, Robert Harvey's vocals are more varied than on previous albums and the lyrics are darker and captivating. This is their first album that I can see myself listening to in its entirity even after the novelty has worn off.

Been worth the wait 17 Jun 2008

Got this CD yesterday and I have to say this album for me is the best i've heard so far this year. I've been a fan of The Music since I heard 'Take the long road and walk it' back in 2002 and immediately purchased their debut which I found to a top record.
It's been four years since the last album was released and it has been well worth the wait. The overall feel of the album is that it has a more dance orientated feel to it then the previous two albums, though the indie sound is still there. All the tracks are amazing, though the stand out one's are strength in numbers, the spike, the left side, get through it, vision, the last one and cold blooded. I hope this album will do well cos the band really deserve it on this effort, the last album was under recognised which was a disappointment. Buy this album because you will not be disappointed at all. Five stars for sure.

I bought this album the day of release and also attended the music's first gig back at the roundhouse in London where they played the new song's for the first time.

I have to admit and agree with another reviewers comments regarding the total lack of connection in this album combined with repetative drum loops and short sharp guitar riffs in comparison to their previous works.

The Music really seem to have turned which once was a lively, creative and FLUID band into one which really is trying too hard to be different compared to their previous outings.

Why change such original fantastic song structure which graced the first two albums? That was The Music I remember and always will.

I have watched and read many interviews with the band regarding the new album and it appears that the majority of the album was concieved by the lead singer and guitarist alone...This was in my view the major floor in leaving out such influential members in the writing process...Having the drums and bass created via computer is exactly how it sounds...No inventive bass licks or drum intervals..Two major parts as to why this band worked so well as a unit.

It's a shame that the band has now called it quits according to Rob Harvey himself,I can only hope that the rest of the band stick together and get back to jamming and creating the vibe they once had,This after all is what made them THE best band in Britain.

The few positive tracks from the album would be "Drugs" "Strength In Numbers" and "Vision"
