It has taken me 10 years to actually buy an Alarm record, despite being a huge punk and new wave fan and i'm amazed at how good this album is!
Mike Peters has always been someone I respected but the clarity of his vocals, the brilliant flowing lyrics and the robust angst-rock sound make this an absolute classic.
The big hit " Spirit of 76" is an epic, nostalgic tribute to the punk glory days which inspired the band, "Dawn Chorus" is a mix of folky verses and anthmenic choruses whilst "The Day The Ravens Left The Tower" is my favourite..with portentous lyrics..images of faraway london burning ( if you are from North Wales) and a nursery rhyme ending.
Serious political lyrics,reflections on the wasteland of Thatcher's Eighties for Northern Britain and a strong melodic depth make this an exhilirating listen.
Compared to their contemparies, with hindsight, I would say that Peters has far more to offer than the smug,preening Bono and this album is better than anything Ian Maculloch offered too!.
Buy this and bask in a bitter-sweet celtic twilight!

Classic 80's album from these Welsh rockers in the same vein as simple minds or U2. Anthemic tracks like spirit of 76, absolute reality and the title track strenght sit perfectly with ballads walk forever by my side and only the thunder. This is an album thats tells about the harsh realitys of life but with a message that these trials faced can be overcome as shown in father to son and deeside yet still leaves you feeling upbeat, highly recommended
