My high mounted bicycle carrier took 30 minutes for me to install and I've always had to stop after a few miles and tighten the straps, this towbar mounted carrier is the best purchase I've made this year. One tiny gripe: It can only comfortably hold 2 adult bikes, I wouldn't like to try 3. I also secure a bungy cord from its upper arms to the rear wiper base to make me feel more comfortable about it not slipping down - but I don't think this is at all necessary.

I paid £25 for this, the quality is good and once it's clamped into place it can take the weight of a heavy set man without budging. After a few uses I can now install it in 2 minutes and take it down in 1 minute. (obviously loading it depends on the bikes..) It has two fail-safes it the form of a key locking in the top bar and a bracketed clamp around its base.

Lightweight but of a reasonably good quality. Clamps on the towball securely and I have put most of my body weight on to test for rigidity and that it doesn't slip off the tow ball or have any lateral movement. I incidentally have a grease free tow ball, I don't think a greasy ball would help as it relies on friction! 3 bikes do fit on, but better as a 2 bike rack. You will probably need to buy a trailer board to legally use this rack, however these can be picked up now for about £15 plus a number plate, so factor this in before you buy. Packs down to a smallish size and I am keeping in the boot as a just in case. Good news, no assembly required as it all folds up in its box and opens out without any fiddly nuts and bolts. I believe the description states this can be used when towing. I cannot see how unless you undo the bottom bracket and attach onto the towball and bolt through but being in the caravan trade, I would not recommend this.

For the money this is a superb piece of kit. Fits perfectly on the towing hitch, I like the added securing feature at the bottom which you don't get on the more expensive well known brands which means it can't move at all. I swung off the thing to make sure it would do the job and it never budged. I do question though whether it would actually accommodate three bikes as two seemed about it's limit.

Where the locking pin fits I would recommend a long shackle padlock, that way you can leave it attached to the car while you're off on a ride without fears of it being nicked or having to keep taking it off and putting it back on although this operation literately takes seconds to do straight out the box. Folds nice and compact for storage what more is there to say.

Fits fairly easily (if not that quickly) to my tow bar and still allows me reasonable visibility out of the rear window. I have fitted 2 adults bikes to it with out any problems but have not yet needed to try 3 but think it looks just about possible. Used it to transport bikes to the Lake district and back from London without any problems and did not notice any obvious change in fuel consumption either. The only downside is that it does block access to the boot and it is not possible to take the rack of with the bikes attached (at least no way that I have yet discovered) so boot access when transporting 2 bikes can be a somewhat drawn out (taking the carrier off) or acrobatic (clambering over the back seat) process.
Overall however, very pleased with it, especially for the price.

This bike carrier is very hard to fit. I bought it so that I could take the children out on their bikes whilst my husband was at work but I couldn't fit it.

You have to force the handle down to lock it in place and this isn't easy. I don't think a women would be able to fit this onto the car unless she was very strong. You would need to remove it and put it in your car whilst riding your bikes as it is very easy to remove and could be stolen whilst your gone.

Would rate this product much higher if it wasn't so hard to fit! as it is a good buy for the price.

I took a chance on this due to it's compact size. It does fit easily to by Bora ball hitch and is sturdy; I was skeptical at first as to whether it would remain stable on the hitch in transport but it's pretty solid. The red mounts and tie-down rubber straps are decent quality and in principle seems to hold a bike on well. The real issue is that a 54" racer just manages to fit it, a 50" racer goes on with a fight but it will not accept a childrens bike. Also, when a bike is put on, there is no way to stop it swinging back and forth under accelaration or braking as the bike 'pivots' on the mounts and bangs into the rear of the car, causing scrapes and chipped paint. Bikes also get scraped easily. The rubber straps take a lot of manual strength to secure the bikes properly.

However, there is a 4-part solution. 1. replace the six mounts with plumbing pipe insulation and gaffer tape for the two bars (and the other metal parts if needed). 2. Get or make up velcro straps to tie the bikes down to the arms. 3. Get a short ratchet/tie-down webbing strap and thread it through the wheels and frame to secure the bikes to the carrier uprights. This stops the bikes swaying. 4. To prevent paint chips, try a thin ply or plastic board between the carrier and car (could use cable ties to fasten it on) or some padding between the bikes and car or between the bikes where they touch.

I think it's a good, sturdy design and good value, but not quite thought through, hence the 3 stars.
