Book Description

Messi, Pele and Maradona, the three greatest soccer players ever, perfected their wizardry on the street. In this unique book, interspersed with personal soccer adventures from around the world, UEFA Pro-Licence coach Steve Payne shows how to transfer the magic of street soccer to the practice field. “This book is an absolute must for every youth coach,” says Han Berger, Technical Director for Football Federation Australia and former head of the Dutch national youth teams. ……“Steve has to be one of the most enthusiastic youth coaches that I have come across in my 30 odd years in professional football,” adds Terry Gibson, former Tottenham and Manchester United striker.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best coaching books you will ever read 25 Aug. 2012

One thing that is definitely missing from our culture today in towns and cities is seeing games of football played in parks, fields, on street corners or on any spare bit of grassland big enough to accommodate a dozen or so kids, a couple of improvised goalposts and a much-loved football.

England's coaches can learn so much from this book. The author, a UEFA Pro Licence coach, has extensive experience of teaching youngsters in Brazil where creativity is encouraged and his approach and coaching techniques are designed to nuture the creative skills of promising young players. The exercises he has devised are focused on making the players learn how to play with freedom rather than making them worried about making mistakes.

Payne cites our obsession with our "get rid of it" culture of youth football, with coaches and parents shouting at their charges from the touchline, as completely detrimental to the development of young players and also recommends the use of Futsal as key in developing players' control and short passing game.

I would thoroughly recommend this book to coaches at all levels; it should be a key reference point for player development at all levels, from youth to professional, and could also be the catalyst for a change of approach that could only be for the good of the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for any parent or coach involved in soccer! Passionate, creative and straight to the point 29 May 2012

Steve Paynes' "Streetwise Soccer" is a must read for any parent who has children invloved in soccer or coaches who train at any level from house league to state / provincial, national levels. In this book Steve goes into detail about the current trend in top countries in how they develop soccer players from the grass roots level and up.

In today's soccer many coaches are only in it to win and lose sight of long term development. Steves' passioniate view towards creating a learning environment where players are allowed to make mistakes with out being called out by either coach or parent runs throughout his book.

The idea of bringing street soccer into training is brilliant. Steve has created training sessions around that theme that allow players to be creative without the fear of making mistakes.

As parent or coach how would you feel if you were micro-managed in your job and told exactly what to do, how to do it for every minute you were at work? Chances are you probably wouldn't and would be lookingfor other work.

This no different than overbearing parents and coaches who do the same thing in a soccer game.
Compare that to street soccer where children are allowed to try new things and make mistakes in the process.

Steve touches on this point throught several training sessions in the book.

Steve also relays to us his experience going through his UEFA Pro Licence, his time in Australia as technical director for Tasmnia and his experience at Cruzero in Brazil.

With over 20 years of experience in soccer at the club level, provincial and national level I can say that this is most refreshing book that has come along in long time.

That being said if you are invlolved in any way with soccer you need to get this book!

Thanks Steve!
