5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Accompinament to the Tate Exhibition, 12 Sep 2008
By brainleek007 (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
I was fortunate enough to catch the actual exhibition at the Tate Modern and I was left pondering the photos I had seen for many weeks afterwards.

Due to not taking a notepad and pencil to write down names of photographers whose work I liked at the time I found myself kicking myself for weeks also as I wanted to look further into some of their work!

Anyway, I stumbled on this book a few months after and snapped it up. It doesn't have every shot form the exhibition in there but it has the 'hero shots' so to speak. It also has all the notes that were presented with the works at the exhibition which generally helps to put the shots in some context and gives insight into the photographer and their motives.

I'm starting a photography degree this September (2008) and found this book an invaluable study aid and a solid overview of it's chosen field and the photographers that made it what it is.

Nothing can compare to seeing these shots at the museum - some of which were huge (the one near the end of the book of the african man and his 'pet' hyena springs to mind - this was probably 8ft square) but this is still a worthwhile purchase for fans of this type of photography or for those who missed the exhibition.
