Product Description

The Street King is a humorous short story, set in a fictionalised version of Aberdeen (a city in Scotland, UK), which combines elements of fantasy, Arthurian legend, satire, surrealism and general good-natured tomfoolery.

Brief Synopsis:

Arthur - Arty to his friends - is a man of the street. It's his home; it's his companion; it's his source of sustenance; it's his supplier of cheap strong lager. Unfortunately, the citizens of Aberdeen generally find him a bit of a nuisance, getting under their feet and in their way when they're trying to go about their ordinary lives.

But Arthur is a man with a rare gift. He has the ability to see things that few others can even dare to imagine. And when he's ordered to undertake a quest to save mankind from the evil engulfing the city, nay the world, he is brave enough to take up the challenge and embark upon an adventure that takes him right into the heart of darkness where demons, ghouls and dragons await.

Suitable for all ages (if you don't mind the odd rude word).

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny and perceptive 28 Jun 2012

This humorous and fantastical short story is related by Arty, an Aberdeen street dwelling alcoholic. He, like his namesake, the legendary King Arthur, seeks the Holy Grail - in the town hall. He is spoken to by animals, mythological beings, a statue, even on one occasion a plant, while heavily influence by the amber nectar. I really enjoyed the humour in this, and the character of Arty which came through very strongly.

On the basis of this I would certainly be interested in reading a longer work by this author. A most enjoyable short story.

Absolutely left-field book. Bought it on a whim with no clear idea of what I was expecting and found myself laughing out loud, wincing and captivated! The 'hero' is definitely somebody you would cross the street to avoid - and his friends possibly more so - but by the end I was absolutely rooting for him. The language is exactly right for the character and, with a little imagination, the slang is easy enough to interpret - in fact that's one of the beauties of the book, it's written in a way that leaves you as the reader to interpret a lot for yourself so you are totally in there with the characters. I'm never going to look at canned lager the same way again!! Definitely going to buy anything else I see by this author.

The story begins at a meeting, with emotional people sitting in a circle facing the last speaker. We don't read about what she's said but it must have been a personal revelation. The chairperson looks around for someone to lighten the mood and picks Arty.

Arty's colourful language captured me immediately, although I wasn't too sure if I wanted to hear what he would reveal. He drew me in with his 'little belter', a charming tale full of mythology mixed with urban life, which stretches the imagination as far as it will go with humour and imaginative symbolism.
The writing style ensured my attention from start to finish.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Short Story 16 Sep 2012
By AnneDon
A modern take on the Search For the Holy Grail, set among Aberdeen's homeless community. This is a likeable story, with an appealing (in spite of his faults) lead character, enjoyable dialogue and situations, with some criticism of Aberdeen's civic life - very understandable, given recent history!

I downloaded this because it was free and sounded like it might be an enjoyable read one day, and there it sat on my Kindle until now. This is not the type of thing I would usually read but I recently picked up and thoroughly enjoyed Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman so, thinking this may be similar, thought I'd give it a shot. A couple of hours later and I was more than pleasantly surprised. This novella has it all, an enticing story line, plenty of stark reality and a nice touch of fantasy to boot. I absolutely loved the perspective that the main character, Arty, added to the whole tale; it leant a real honesty to the book at the same time as giving you a sneak peek into the fantastical world of this alcoholic street drinker.

In summary, this is a cheerful little piece that has been written with a light-bodied, smooth and crisp style that will have you thirsting for more from this talented author. I recommend you to take a sip now, you'll love it!

Nearly gave up on this one as it was a little slow to get going, but I'm so glad I didn't.
A great fantasy/allegory/rant...you choose...it's like nothing else I've read before, which I can't explain without the dreaded spoiler.
Really original idea, beautifully executed....45 minutes of your time well spent.....and it's currently FREEEE

I really did not know what to expect when I started to read this book. All I can say is, wow. This short story is really different to anything I have read before. All I will say is the Arthurian Legend is dropped in very nicely and the encounter with'God' is fabulous.

If you want something that little bit different to read, something that grabs you, pulls you in and makes you laugh as well as wondering what on earth is going on, then this is a story you must read.

R.K. Lewis, whoever you are, thankyou. I loved this story.
