Book Description

2 Jun 2011
Forget posh, Michelin-star restaurants. Some of the best food around is now being served at affordable prices from pop-up cafes and restored trailers. What we are seeing is a grassroots revolution in British food whose most eminent champion is Richard Johnson. He tells the remarkable stories of the budding entrepreneurs who have chosen wheels over bricks-and-mortar to peddle their wares. From the porridge bar outside Edinburgh castle to the coffee cart on the north coast of Ireland to the banh mi stall in London's East End, these vendors serve up delicious meals that are prepared and cooked right in front of you. The mobilers' stories form the backbone of the book, which is peppered with 60 inspiring recipes from around the world.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good little book but 25 Oct 2013

not as inspiring as some others. The recipes are clear and with photos for most of them but I was expecting more burgers, tacos, fajitas instead of sea bream with caper sauce...
It's still worth the money, although most recipes there are cooked from vans/trailers I find them very similar to recipes found in any kind cookbook...

5.0 out of 5 stars lively and interesting cook-book 17 Aug 2013

Street food, or a certain kind of street food, is the latest culinary thing at the moment and there are quite a few books out there to celebrate the fact. There are a couple of things in the introduction to this book which grate slightly, but read on because there is much to interest and entertain, in an informative sort of way, in the rest of the book, not least the level of success some of the vendors are having with their food. There is a good range of food types and recipes to follow that are more traditional than haute cuisine, but this is the real charm of the book: street food is back to our roots, the sort of food that has been eaten and developed over decades or even centuries, continually finding a new twist to whet the appetite. I teach cookery and am very interested in this area of the business, but it is great food to enjoy at home, around the barbecue and in the garden, at the beach and for any kind of picnic, so 5 stars as far as I am concerned. Anyone with an interest in food and cookery will find good recipes to try from amazing porridge to desserts via game, meat fish and vegetables and world foods, all good to eat outdoors and with family and friends.

Couldn't put this book down! Loved how each van/stall had their own story written about them and where they started. Nice to read about vendors from all over country as well and not just London. Great recipes as well - surprised they gave so much away! Really fun book and very inspirational if you're looking at setting up your own street food business.
