Old Skool but Still Good 19 April 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This movie is a classic game to movie conversion - back at a time when they used to be almost guaranteed flops.

However, if you were a fan of the game, in any format, then this will hit the button. If you missed out, prepare to take a step back in time to a campy, costumed world of Streetfighter.

The characters are pretty honest to the game mythos, a few outfit changes, mainly to Cammy, played by Kylie. The actress Ming Na-Wen as Chun-Li is a stand out. She is actually a superb actress, not stretched in this role of course but she certainly does the job.

The story is largely irrelevant. We have a cruel mastermind, a wronged Chinese girl, a do-gooding UN and a couple of cool fighters - stick this is the blender with some excellent locations and set and you get the idea...

The rest of the gang are there in some funky and colourful costumes. What I liked about this movie is that the violence and fighting is clearly comic book stuff. The sets are bright and the whole thing is a camp fantasy.

Sit back and enjoy it. Don't judge it too harshly and don't over-think what plot there is. Enjoy the villains and the heroes in this quirky piece of kitsch which I think has developed some form of cult following - or maybe that's just me!

Coming upon this page, I must say that I expected only 5 star reviews for such an historic piece of cinema. Once the initial shock of the bad reviews had worn off, and I realised that they must have all merely been in jest, I felt it may be wise to add my own thoughts.

The Street Fighter series was once that had lofty expectations in all forms of media - The 2nd game had set a massive precedent, and had firmly established itself as the best fighting game in the world at the time. As a young lad I felt many things playing the game. Joy, frustration, happiness, even sadness because I felt bad when the game said that Ryu had no friends. He looked lonely, and his stage made me sad.

In 1994, the stars aligned, and born from this was the greatest film achievement ever seen. A film jam-packed with Action, tension, fantastic direction, fantastic acting, it's an all around 5 star classic. Raul Julia really steals the show as the 'psychotic' M Bison, delivering a Shakespearean twist on such an excellent character that can only be described as the single best example of acting that has ever been put to film. His speech about his nature and intentions in particular was phenomenal. As ever, Jean Claude Van Damme is brilliant, and plays the role of Guile very well.

Every role is impeccably filled by its actor, they look like they were born to be the character they play, apart from Sagat who is played by a manlet, when he's actually supposed to be very tall. Also, no matter how long Kylie Minogue pretends to be English in this film, adverts, other shows and such, she will never be English. Sorry Kylie, accept it and move on.

In conclusion, if you want the action thrillride of a lifetime that will emotionally exhaust you in the space of an hour and a half, you NEED this film in your life. I wish I could award it more than 5 stars.

This movie after all these years is now a gem I would say, it has its flaws of course and things that are not quite true to the game but who cares anymore! For the time this movie was made it was big budget and has some quality action scenes and fighting, the cast is cool Van Damme is great and Kylie Minogue is hot as Cammy even if shes not British. There is not much in the way of effects but still overall its a cool little film that deserves to be seen.
