Product Description

Street Fighter Alpha Anthology is a monumental compilation of the entire Street Fighter Alpha arcade series. The collection features direct arcade conversions of Street Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold and Street Fighter Alpha 3 which have never before been available together in one package. As an added bonus, the "pint-sized" Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix (also released on consoles as Pocket Fighter), is included which brings the total to five action packed games on one disc.

All titles in the collection feature three core game play options. Arcade mode pits competitors against a series of CPU controlled opponents in order to beat the game. Versus mode allows two players to choose among the cast of characters for intense head-to-head battles. Fighters can practice special moves and combos to hone their skills in the training mode. Additionally, all four Alpha titles feature survival mode as well as a dramatic battle mode which allows 2-on-1 tag team matches.

For me after street fighter 3 3rd strike, the Alpha series if my favourite street fighter. It has a great cast of characters, nice balanced varied gameplay and some awsome music with some nicely drawn 2d characters and stages. I remember owning each of the alpha series on console almost 10 years ago. One thing i remember was the artwork that was available in alpha 2 and the awsome deep world tour mode in alpha 3. So when alpha anthology was released i knew it was gonna be one of the few good retro compilations that are around nowadays.

Now dont get me wrong, playing all the alpha series brings back some awsome memories, but i feel that the games have kinda been stripped down. The characters are all their, the stages the music, the modes. But when its an anthology, i wanted to see like art work, and galleries just a whole lot of extras that youd expect when its an anthology. Well thats not in this anthology, which is kind of a dissapointment. If you've never played a street fighter alpha game then you really need to play this, if you havent played alpha 3 but have played alpha 2 or 1 you still need to play this game, cos alpha 3 is the best most complete alpha around. Now on to pocket fighter, this game coulda been something pretty special. It features most of well known characters from street fighter and some from the "dark stalkers series" in a kiddish form. However the game play isnt as fun or as straight foward as a regular street fighter, Capcom introduced "gems" which help power your characters moves through out the fight making this somewhat like "powerstone" but without the 3d enviroments.

One thing iv left till the end though, is an unlockable feature in the anthology, that allows you to fully customize your street fighter matches, everything from the glitches, super gauges, and types of moves your characters have. This adds hours of replayability to the game. All in all though, this is still a good reminder that a set of games 10 years old still hold up against some of the lesser 2d beat em ups of today. This is definetly one for the street fighter fans and new comers alike.

If it had the extras it would've got 5 stars.

Fun:
I was a huge fan of Street Fighter II back in the day (on the Mega Drive and arcade) and I thought I had mastered Street Fighter so I hung up my joypad a while back.

Then I played this game. Better then arcade (or chip shop -if you were like me ;-) graphics and flawless gameplay. The CPU opponent is extremely smart and if you stick a memory card in your PS2 the game seems to remember what tactics you use and it adapts its style to counter them each time you play! No cheesy, fireball, dragon punch routines will work for long here! Another quality of this game is that the CPU does the same damage with its moves as a human player unlike the old console versions (Mega Drive and PS1) of Street Fighter II where the computer could easily KO you if it managed to land 4 or 5 hits.

I only have two quibbles with the game, firstly there is no special moves list so you either have to learn through trial and error or trall the internet-this is an unnessary ommission from Capcom. Secondly, for some reason in Alpha 3 the process of performing a throw has changed from every other version of Street Fighter which is somewhat confusing if you are not aware of it.

Be warned however that the PS2 pad is not particularly user friendly with these games as the pad does not cope well when you are trying to do complex rotations and the button layout is cumberson. Hence I have given the fun aspect only 4 stars as it can get frustrating when you lose due to the pad not responding to your moves.

Once you adjust to this however, you will find a challenge and gameplay that will keep you entertained for years.

Fun:
Bought this game for my brother as a gift and he absolutely loves it. Keeps him entertained. Apparently it is a few games rolled into one. Thanks for the speedy delivery. I needed it at a certain date and it arrived on the day needed.
