For me after street fighter 3 3rd strike, the Alpha series if my favourite street fighter. It has a great cast of characters, nice balanced varied gameplay and some awsome music with some nicely drawn 2d characters and stages. I remember owning each of the alpha series on console almost 10 years ago. One thing i remember was the artwork that was available in alpha 2 and the awsome deep world tour mode in alpha 3. So when alpha anthology was released i knew it was gonna be one of the few good retro compilations that are around nowadays.
Now dont get me wrong, playing all the alpha series brings back some awsome memories, but i feel that the games have kinda been stripped down. The characters are all their, the stages the music, the modes. But when its an anthology, i wanted to see like art work, and galleries just a whole lot of extras that youd expect when its an anthology. Well thats not in this anthology, which is kind of a dissapointment. If you've never played a street fighter alpha game then you really need to play this, if you havent played alpha 3 but have played alpha 2 or 1 you still need to play this game, cos alpha 3 is the best most complete alpha around. Now on to pocket fighter, this game coulda been something pretty special. It features most of well known characters from street fighter and some from the "dark stalkers series" in a kiddish form. However the game play isnt as fun or as straight foward as a regular street fighter, Capcom introduced "gems" which help power your characters moves through out the fight making this somewhat like "powerstone" but without the 3d enviroments.
One thing iv left till the end though, is an unlockable feature in the anthology, that allows you to fully customize your street fighter matches, everything from the glitches, super gauges, and types of moves your characters have. This adds hours of replayability to the game. All in all though, this is still a good reminder that a set of games 10 years old still hold up against some of the lesser 2d beat em ups of today. This is definetly one for the street fighter fans and new comers alike.
If it had the extras it would've got 5 stars.
