5.0 out of 5 stars Great Year 5 book 17 Mar 2009
By Beck G
Format:Paperback
I am currently reading this book to my year 5 class to tie in with our Victorians topic where we are looking at the contrasting lives of rich and poor Victorian children. The children are really enjoying the book and so am I! There are a lot of discussion points (such as life in the workhouse and why some children end up on the streets) and it has lent itself to our topic in many ways. The children really enjoy the fact that it is based around the life of a real boy rather than a fictional character and it has introduced Dr Barnardo into our topic too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A review of Street Child 15 Mar 2010
A Kid's Review
Format:Paperback
This is a book based in the Victorian era about a street child called Jim Jarvis.
After losing his mother, Jim finds him-self in the Workhouse.
His life there is wretched even though he has friends, food and shelter. He knows he must escape....
We really enjoyed the book as it is based on real people. It's a book that helps people learning about the Victorians realise that life for children was difficult!
This story made us: laugh, cry, feel scared and happy all in one go which not all books do!

5.0 out of 5 stars St Teresa's Book Review 8 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback
Street Child is a gripping novel which draws the reader in. As soon as you read the blurb you have to read the whole story up to the very end. It introduces Jim, a poor Victorian boy who is kicked out of his rented home and sent to the workhouse- a dreadful place to be. The intesity of this book almost turns the pages for you as you delve into the depths of emotion. We would give it 11\10 because the writer creates a whirl of emotion and a mixture of feelings. The fact that it is set in Victoran times really sets the scene and makes this read the best it can be.
Overall, this is an excellent book which we would recommend to people from the ages 9 and above.

This is a great book with a sad story. I have used it for a four week Literacy block with my year 4 class and they have thoroughly enjoyed it, producing some excellent writing. I would highly recommend this book for using in school or just reading for pleasure.

Street Child is a great book which gives you a great idea of the Victorian times. It is really interesting because you never know what is going to happen next. There is always something new happening every other page!
This book is about a book called Jim Jarvis, who was forced to live on the street with his family. When his sisters are gone and his mother dies Jim has to live the scary life of a Victorian child on his own.
I think the best and most exciting part was when Jim escaped from the cruel Grimy Nick after being tortured endlessly. The boring bit was when the authoress made Jim escape twice.
I would recommend this book for ages 9 and above and any class learning about the Victorians! A must-read!
Review by A

In history we have been reading a book called Street Child, written by Berlie Doherty. I like this book because it has lots of old Victorian words and I have learnt lots of interesting facts that I didn't know.
Street Child tells the story of a boy called Jim Jarvis who lived in a house then became homeless he spent time in the workhouse and worked for a monster called Grimy Nick.
I think the best bit was when Jim escaped from Grimy Nick it was very dramatic and the worst bit was when Jim was living in a on bedroom house it was a bit dull. My favorite character was Jim because he was very fun to hear all the exciting things that happened. The setting of the circus was a very good seen because Jim said he wanted to work in a circus.
I proudly recommend this book it lots of red herring in it's a very exciting but cruel book. I recommend to use when you are doing the inventive Victorians this is the best book for a history project a must read.

Format:Paperback
This book is a terrific adventure story based on a young orphan boy who ran away from the workhouse after his mother died. Reading about it was enough to arouse my interest and my sympathy.
The book is based on a true characters which were rescued by the charity of Barnados because of this it makes the book very compelling and a hear warming novel. Highly recommended !
