Product Description

Review

Chandes explained that the last thing they had wanted was a graffiti retrospective. Though the show does include some historical references and recreates some famous graffiti from New York, the focus here has more to do with gesturing and language, the tradition of wall painting and the performative aspect of street art. Chandes explained that contemporary graffiti art went way beyond the spray can medium and quizzed me on the two most important graffiti capitals in the world. New York and Johannesburg? I guessed. No! São Paulo and Santiago, Chile. --New York Times, Stefano Tonchi, July 7, 2009 --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

In 2007 art historian Rod Palmer moved to Chile - abandoning his home in London with the idea of working without distraction - in order to record the paintings that cover the walls of our cities. The collection of these murals form Street Art Chile, a serious book on local graffiti published in England. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

I would certainly recommend this book. There are plenty of books out on street art at the moment, but this one is a bit different. Obviously Chilean street art is quite an obscure subject, but the author has written a very lucid introduction explaining the history of mural art in the country since the 1940s. The book is divided into two sections, one on locations (from the far North to the deep South of the country) and one on artists. There are also translations of the Spanish texts and Chilean slang. Good addition to growing subject.

Chile has a long history of artistic self-expression and this book bears witness to that. The post-Pinochet generation has a new agenda and the graffiti artists highlighted here reveal a rich mix of cultural vibrancy. The author gives good background details to the 'movimiento' and shows many examples from around the country with individual artists credited. It's a fsscinating story and one to take lessons from.

Chile from the streets - maravilloso! 14 May 2008
By Michael Freeman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
For a South American enthusiast like me (I spend a month every year in Colombia), this is a very welcome addition to the crowds of street art books. Brazil is already well covered, so it's great now to have Chile. The book has obviously been thoroughly researched by the author, and unlike many books on the subject, has plenty of text. I like the way that it covers Chile's mural tradition and the artistic influences on the country. Even though I speak and read Spanish myself, it's good that the Spanish texts are translated into English. For anyone interested in contemporary culture in Chile, this is the book.
