With a series of albums on Blue Note, Joe Lovano has provenhis mettle as a modern tenor saxophonist in a dazzling variety of contexts. STREAMS OF EXPRESSION finds him both payingtribute to and reinventing the iconic Miles Davis album BIRTH OF THE COOL. With a large group (and the assistance of legendary conductor/arranger Gunter Schuller), Lovano achievesan exhilarating balance of intricate arrangements and vividimprovisation. STREAMS is loaded with dexterous, swinging ensemble passages and bright, concise soloing--special nods go to Lovano (featured on clarinet as well as tenor), Gary Smulyan, and John Hicks (who passed away not long after these sessions).

Cool and third-streamish jazz is not really my thing, but this is such a great collection of diverse, beautifully performed and arranged music that I'm left really impressed. Naturally, Lovano shines through like a real jazz-giant he obviously is and his respect for the jazz elders (not only Miles Davis and Gil Evans but also Ben Webster, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, etc.) is something that suits me just fine...

The strange instrument he uses to emulate a part of Rahsaan Kirk-ish musical bonanza is a welcome addition to the repertoire of jazz instruments (and I say this although I'm not particularly fond of soprano-sax, the instrument this invention is based upon).

Prepare to be dazzled and surprised by this album.
