Brilliant songs 3 Oct 2008
Format:Audio CD
The Damned are without doubt one of the best bands to come out of the original punk movement. This is because they knew how to write great songs, from Brian James raw writing on the first 2 albums through the brilliant Machine Gun Etiquette, The Black Album and Strawberries where Captain's influence comes to the fore. On Strawberries, The Damned seemed to be at a songwriting peak and found many new fans. There really isn't a bad song on the album, maybe songs that the fans wanting a harder sound may have found too soft but for those there are songs like Ignite. However, the brilliance of songs like Stranger On The Town, Gun Fury, Badtime For Bonzo and Under The Floor Again make this album one of their best. Not as raw as Damned Damned Damned or the punk perfection of Machine Gun Etiquette (probably the best punk album ever)but in its own right a brilliant album from start to finish. Buy this album you swines!

By Kelvin J. Dickinson VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
This is NOT the smile of a demented circus clown. It's real. They make me laugh.

That's because they're funny, bloody funny, THE DAMNED. Always laughing themselves, always taking the piss. But underneath that shallow and occasionally stupid exterior, their grasp and mastery of the perfect pop song has for many years remained largely untouchable. STRAWBERRIES, like its brilliant predecessor, THE BLACK ALBUM, is a fine example of The Damned's underrated songwriting ability. Awash with thrashing guitars, scattergun drums, psychedelic keybords and a dynamic brass and sax section, the bi-polar vocals of DAVE VANIAN and the finely balanced harmonies of CAPTAIN SENSIBLE all converge in one big haze of exuberant showmanship. Either that, or there's some seriously gleeful arsing around going on, take your pick. Whatever the case, this album belongs in everyone's punk rock/new wave collections, the perfect antidote to some of the more po-faced product of the era; you know who you are, Mr Devoto and Ms Sioux. Truth is, whatever else is going on in my life, The Damned never fail to cheer me up.

Outstanding tracks: GENERALS; THE DOG; UNDER THE FLOOR AGAIN; DOZEN GIRLS; GUN FURY.

Outstanding Bonus Track: LOVELY MONEY - fabulous, but listen out for the breathtakingly politically incorrect sidewipe at the Argentinian invasion of the Falkland Islands. A marvel of its time and, forgive me, still quite hilarious. Big Wow indeed, Viv Stanshall.

BONUS TRIVIA FACT: Both the inner sleeve and labels of the original vinyl LP were impregnated with an artificial strawberry essence - which after nearly twenty-five years CONTINUE TO SMELL FRUITY! Bless 'em.

VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Great album 17 Oct 2007
Format:Audio CD
I bought this album when it came out on vinyl(Remember that?!!) and wasn't sure about it. Now after the passing of time it's one of my faves. There are some great tracks on it. "Ignite" and "Generals" have the bite of early Damned tracks whilst tracks like "The Dog" point the direction the band were heading. 9 Bonus tracks including the brilliant "lovely Money" (With Viv Stanshalls hilarious narrative)make this an essential purchase. An absolute gem of an album
