I came to this download recording through the mono LP, (World Record Club T159 - a 1959 recording), I bought cheaply a few weeks ago. Mesmeric is how I'd describe it. Goossens gave the UK premier of the work in the early 1920's with the composer present. I guess 50+ years ago 'The Rite' was not the standard repertoire piece its is now & this recording fells to me to retain some of the roar emotions & struggles that must have been felt only 46 years before, at the 1913 Paris premier. Would I recommend this recording & download? For the price it is WELL worth it. This download, unlike the LP I mentioned is in fine stereo too.

This review is for the LSO version with Eugene Goossens. First of all, 5 stars for the piece, but that was never in doubt. The problem here is the recording. I was looking for a cheap version of Rite of Spring, and at £0.69 this is pretty cheap. However, the quality is terrible. For some reason, they play it much too slowly and with little precision, to the point where I wondered if this was the youth orchestra version or something. The staccato theme in 'Augurs of Spring' is less 'pah-pah-pah-pah' than 'fwa-...-fwa-...-fwa-...-fwa' which is very annoying. I think I'll have to buy it again, but I'll stay safe this time and buy a CD version. Not happy with this one at all.
