Paavo - like his father, Neeme - is clearly on a path to greatness. On this recording, as well as his of the "Firebird" and "Petrouchka", he draws a full-bodied, full-throated confidence from the Cincinnati Orchestra, and produces a very exciting and satisfying performance. I think this "Rite" ranks right up there with Montreal under Dutoit, with the added benefit of a seemingly "closer" recording which enables us to hear some of the finer orchestral details in the more complicated (it's all complicated!) passages. Very well done, well worth adding to your growing "Rite" collection, you will listen to it more than others!

In my opinion this is the best of the recordings of the Stravinsky Rite of Spring. Jarvi's direction is spot on and the close miking brings out some of the subtler voices like the low reeds and double reeds. Where the contrabassoon and bass clarinets usually go nearly unnoticed, this version puts them right where you can hear and feel them. My only complaint with this recording is that it is not available on vinyl. Never mind. The CD will shake, rattle and roll you - in the best possible way.
