2. Symphony of Psalms - City Of Birmingham Symphony Chorus

Product Description

CD Description

After their much lauded CD of Richard Strauss, Stravinsky is the next great composer of the 20th century to feature the CBSO under its music director Andris Nelsons. On this, their third CD with Orfeo, Stravinsky the avant-gardist on his way to world fame is represented by the complete Firebird ballet, while the Symphony of Psalms is testament to the mature composer. However, Nelsons and the CBSO leave us not a moment of doubt that even at the age of 27, Stravinsky could draw on an embarrassment of compositional riches. These colourful riches are here juxtaposed with the Symphony of Psalms, with all its Orthodox austerity, its reduced textures and angular contours. As you would expect, the CBSO Chorus, trained by Simon Halsey, here offers a well-drilled interpretation will captivate the listener from the beginning through to the final Laudate Dominum .

5.0 out of 5 stars The finest recording yet in a very crowded field 23 Nov 2011

I really did not need another Firebird, much though I love it, either one of the various suites or the complete ballet, as I have more recordings than sanity should allow. All time favourites for the complete ballet are Haitink with the Berlin Phil and Salonen with the Philharmonia. Of course the Stravinsky Columbia Symphony version is interesting, but as he himself confessed by the time he recorded it he was totally indifferent to the work, and I feel that this is evident in the recording, and neither am I impressed by the Gergiev Kirov account which is more highly regarded by others than by me. It's decent enough, but does not "catch fire" for me.
I have not till now been overwhelmed by Nelsons and the CBSO-I bought their Ein Heldenleben last year on recommendation and was frankly very disappointed with it.
However, in November 2011 I attended a concert in which they performed the Shostakovich Seventh Symphony-Leningrad-and this proved to be one of the most overwhelming musical experiences ever. Buoyed up by this enthusiasm, I ordered their already praised Firebird ballet , and I am delighted that I did as it is by far the finest recording I have ever heard of the work complete.

All praise to OEHMS for this enterprise, which is technically and artistically a triumph. The recording has a wide dynamic range, with pianissimos' perfectly caught, and climaxes that just stop short of ear shattering, but which are perfectly balanced. I have never heard so much of the extraordinary percussive effects so revealed, as is the case with all the exotic elements of the 1910 score.
Nelsons is a genuine interpreter-this is no run through. He nurtures and nudges the phrasing, employing subtle rubato frequently, but giving the music its head when required.

5.0 out of 5 stars senational stravinsky 25 Nov 2010

This is the best Symphony of Psalms I've ever heard and The Firebird is one of the few recordings that can be mentioned in the same breath as the Dorati /LSO version on Mercury. Outstanding in every respect, with the CBSO again showing that under the inspiring leadership of Andris Nelsons it can play to the very highest international standards.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent perfomance and recording 24 Jan 2011

I heard the CBSO and Andris Nelsons play The Firebird in Symphony Hall. This disc recaptures the excitement and wonder of that performance. The CBSO is on top form and they play their hearts out for their outstanding Music Director. The bonus on this disc - the Symphony of Psalms, with the CBSO Chorus, is equally splendid.

The sound on this disc is superb - from the near silence of the opening bars of Firebird to its triumpant climax.

I listened to this using the Music ProLogic setting of my sound system: the orchestra was laid out in front of me in a recreation of the acoustic of the wonderful Symphony Hall. I am using a lot of superlatives - they are all deserved.
