Book Description

Robert Craft was co-conductor, companion and confidant to Igor Stravinsky for the last two decades of the composer’s life, an intimate working relationship that is unique in musical history. Now, in his ninetieth year, Craft has produced a book of astonishing freshness, warmth and wit as he surveys through the lens of his own distinctive position Stravinsky’s relationships with others – from family members to fellow composers to some of the greatest writers, philosophers, politicians and artists of the time. Craft has written often of this period, but in Stravinsky: Discoveries and Memories he explores areas of the composer’s life that he has never before touched upon. Peppered with delightful anecdotes, it is at times revelatory, showing sides of Stravinsky that only now Craft feels able to consider. The years have given Robert Craft a balanced view of the composer he knew so well. Not only was he present at important meetings, rehearsals and premieres as well as numerous dinners and parties, he was also there when Stravinsky reminisced about the early years; the composer trusted him and gave him unique access to his archives.

Among the many people discussed in connection with Stravinsky are Anton Webern, Arnold Schoenberg, George Balanchine, Serge Diaghilev, Maurice Ravel, Nino Rota, Giacomo Puccini, Sergei Prokofiev, George Gershwin, Luciano Berio, Benito Mussolini, Salvador Dalí, Henry Moore, Sir Isaiah Berlin, Thomas Mann, Sir Kenneth Clark, James Joyce, T. S. Eliot, Aldous Huxley and Edwin Hubble.

The usual dull hubristic unreliable dog-eared reminiscences, peppered this time with what is presumably the first of a series of diatribes about the next generation of Stravinskys from a small-minded pedantic untalented little hack who has yet to learn to live in the shadow of a great talent with any grace. Too late now, I guess.

A waste of money, and depressing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Insights into the Man and his Contemporaries 25 Sept. 2013
By Robert B. Goodsell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book is not aimed at any general audience. That said, I can say that it was for me one of the most pleasurable reads I have had in a long time. Those familiar with Stravinsky's entire output and that of his contemporaries in music, art, literature and even science will find many surprises and insights. Craft, whose association with the composer spanned decades, offers intimate details that could be provided by no other person. He gives us the less attractive parts of Stravinsky's character and his human weaknesses (such as a real love of strong drink) along with the praise, of which there is much. For lovers of gossip, biography and 20th-century music, this book is a real find.

5.0 out of 5 stars As with any Robert Craft book, thoughtful and engaging! 27 May 2013
By Charles McGovern - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I could read Mr. Crafts observations and memories of Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Huxley, etc over and over again for the rest of my life. Scholarly, in-depth, humorous.... it's all there. One down side is that the Kindle Edition has some formatting issues where gibberish is substituted for ill-formatted letters symbols. The apostrophe has been substituted with "ȃCtm" makes for very confusing reading when you realize that all contractions, before and after every music title, artwork, etc uses these little guys. So "Stravinsky's Rite of Spring" becomes "StravinskyȃCtms ȃCtmRite of SpringȃCtm". Not impossible, but difficult decoding when you are reading about something and you can't tell what part of the word is legitimate and what is a coding issue!

Still loved this book.
