Bravura Technique and Intelligence 2 April 2011

Katia and Marielle Labèque have been the leading two piano team form many years (it is difficult when seeing these lithe and beautiful and hearing the fireworks they bring forth form their pianos to realize they were born in 1950 and 1952!): they remain the finest as this splendid recording of works by Stravinsky with a dollop of Debussy demonstrates. They are currently performing the 'Concerto for Two Solo Pianos' as the opening work for a program conducted by Composer in residence for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, follow that stunning experience by joining the piano squad for Stravinsky's 'Les Noces'.

The Labèque sisters have a penchant for the driving rhythms and keyboard fireworks that the Concerto for Two Solo Pianos demands: the piece was one of Stravinsky's favorites and a work that he played with his son Soulima on concert tours. The work abounds in surprises in rhythmic changes, percussive sections, eloquent melody lines that seem to appear out of nowhere. The Notturno section is dreamy music and the Variations section that follow defy description, so thoroughly well composed and timed between the two piano keyboards are they. The Labèques give it their all - which is considerable!

The Debussy 'En blanc et noir' is a well placed bit of impressionism that serves as a counterbalance for the remaining Stravinsky works on the recording. The 'Small Pieces' are anything but small and easy and the recording offers some light entertainment in the 'Ragtime', the 'Waltz of Flowers', and the infectious 'Tango'. This is a solid recording, one that allows us to see just how spectacular are the Labèque ladies. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, April 11

Katia and Marielle are performing some real magic here. Stravinsky's Concerto for 2 Pianos is a masterwork equal in every way to his Petrouchka. Unfortunately, I've found without exception even with so great and beloved performers like the Kontarsky brothers the concerto never gets up off the ground (comparitively speaking), laying like a lifeless wooden Petrouchka. This time the girls beat the boys by a mile. Katie and Marielle make Stravinsky's concerto vibrate with such intense primal and spiritual energy it would give even Rudolf Nureyev a run for his money. Unspeakable good, wonderful. So in case you were wondering about the rest of the disc, it's very good. Good performances of En Blanc et Noir abound and no one doubts the validity of the piece as central to the two piano repetoire. This is the reason why I chose to gush over the Stravinsky here. Without the Labeque touch, I would have forever missed the greatness of Stravinsky's work. There's another recording of Stravinsky's Concerto for 2 Pianos with Petrouchka for two pianos and 8 Easy Pieces for Piano Duet on the Phillips label by the Labeque sisters. It is every bit as good and slightly different in some ways. The trills are a little different in the first movement and the fugue at the end doesn't have that weird little "ghost sound" that this recording has. (It's a fun little Easter Egg hunt.) It's nice to have a version that doesn't go "iiieeeeeehhyyy..." right in the middle but that in no way detracts significantly from the recording.

The accompanying DVD has some very interesting visuals by Tal Rosner. The video really matches the spirit of the music with its kaleidoscopic movement and bending of time. It works well for both the Stravinsky and Debussy. There are 2 videos on youtube of the first two movements of Stravinsky's Concerto for 2 Pianos if you need any more convincing.
