Even More Krauss & Strauss 8 Mar. 2014
By Michael Brad Richman - Published on Amazon.com
Verified Purchase
I purchased all of the Krauss/Strauss Testament CDs more than ten years ago, but never focused at the time that they were unreviewed on Amazon, and was surprised to discover the other day that three of them still were not critiqued. As the photograph on the album cover illustrates, the composer and conductor were colleagues and friends, the former mentoring the latter and referring to him, according to the liner notes, as "my dear baton." While recordings do exist of Strauss conducting his own music (Alpine Symphony on Dutton comes to mind), it is more in the vein of Elgar's recordings than Stravinsky's in terms of sound quality. As a result, these the various Krauss recordings of Strauss' music in many ways become the definitive reference recordings of these works, as they are in solid mono sound but lack the stereo expanse that make Strauss such an enjoyable hi-fi listening experience. While all of the Krauss/Strauss Testament discs are wonderful, the one to get is Clemens Krauss Conducts Strauss: Ein Heldenleben / Also Sprach Zarathustra because it is such a magical pairing. This "Sinfonia Domestica" is special, but the best Strauss interpreters in my opinion -- Karajan, Reiner and Kempe -- are also very good in this material, as are the latter two in the "Bourgeois Gentilhomme" Suite. Like most rescued reissues from this label, these are performances for the classical connoisseur, but if you fit that description, these handful of discs are definitely worthwhile investments.
