Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Rather to my amazement, there are now several CDs available that are dedicated to the little-known piano music that Richard Strauss wrote in his teens; this Harmonia Mundi CD contains all of it worth recording in excellent performances. The CD has now been re-released in the label's budget imprint Strauss - Piano Sonata Op.5 / Klavierstucke Op.3 / Stimmungsbilder Op. 9 (Frank Braley), which is clearly the better buy nowadays.

Until this disc was released, I think I'm right in saying that the only alternatives came from Glenn Gould (Richard Strauss: Sonata, Op. 5; 5 Piano Pieces, Op. 3 or here Glenn Gould plays Richard Strauss: Ophelia Lieder op. 67; Enoch Arden op. 38; Piano Sonata op. 5; 5 Piano Pieces op. 3) and Stefan Vladar on a long-deleted Koch disc Strauss:Solo Pn Works. Since then, aside from Braley's recording, we have had an excellent Danacord disc from Oleg Marshev Piano Music (Oleg Marshev) and, much more recently, a highly-regarded CD on Naxos from Stefan Veselka, a recording that I have yet to hear Strauss, R - Piano Works.
