I haven't had time yet to really get to know this work, except to say that what I have heard seems fascinating. There is an element of 'new music,' atonality and such, piled on top of the more familiar gemutlich Strauss style, with an intention to shock. This music sounds strange and difficult in 2014, Lord knows what they made of it in 1909. Using the largest forces ever required in opera it has been described as music of titanic grandeur and Dionysiac violence, soaked in blood, terror, grief and compassion. So far I haven't found much compassion in evidence, it certainly isn't 'easy listening.' But if you are up for a challenge this is the very work for you, As for the performance, Rudolf Kempe was probably the most accomplished Straussian of his times, and for a recording probably made in the 50's the sound is astonishingly good. You can have all this for a few pence on Amazon, don't miss it!

There was a time when Strauss' gripping on-act opera Elektra was a common item but in the past couple of decades it has rather faded from view, with the likes of Die Frau ohne Schatten, Ariadne auf Naxos, the evergreen Rosenkavalier and Salome to the fore. This archival recording from Covent Garden may not have the best sound, but it has Rudolf Kempe on the podium and a fine cast. Unmissable!

I have several versions of Elektra, so to add this one for such a small layout, you know it makes sense.
