The first of eight one-hour episodes of "The Strauss Family" was broadcast on ATV on 7 November 1972 to great acclaim. This glossily-mounted series proved phenomenally successful; indeed, during week ending 17 November 1972 it tied (with "Colditz") as the most popular TV programme in the London area. It lodged itself firmly as a favourite with the public and, all these years later, it remains the most authentic series (including cinematic portrayals) about the Strausses yet filmed. The superb dramatic content aside, an excellent musical score was provided by The London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Cyril Ornadel. (In contrast, a £17.5 million, 12-part series, "The Strauss Dynasty", recorded in English but dubbed into various other languages and broadcast during 1991/1992 across the world - but curiously not in GB - proved so contentious and inaccurate that the present-day Strauss family published an angry disclaimer in the Austrian press, distancing themselves from it.) A two-video cassette set of ATV's "The Strauss Family" was issued by Precision Video in 1981, but, 26 years later, we can finally welcome this three-disc 2007 release on Region 2 DVD. This issuee is highly recommended. Do not miss this chance to snap up a copy!

Having visited Vienna, a simply wonderful city I rate second only to Paris, we wanted to see this series and it was everything we hoped and more. The whole gripping story of the various Strausses along with Josef Strauss's rivalry with Lanner (played so excellently by Derek Jacobi but it's excellent acting throughout especially by Anne Stallybrass as Josef's long-suffering but resourceful wife). And also - music galore, all the famous pieces and others too. So we had to buy CD sets of the Strausses and Lanner as well. You may have to buy from Amazon.de or Amazon.au for the best CD sets.

Must confess it took an episode to "get into" the theatrical style. But, once one has adjusted to the style you get sucked into the music and story and costumes and peformances. Read more
