The entire table is made of eucalyptus wood, a dense and durable all-weather wood. Left untreated, eucalyptus will weather following exposure to the elements, it turns a soft shade of silver / grey similar to the weathering of teak. Furthermore if left untreated, natural splitting or cracks will appear, however this will not affect the durability of the furniture. To protect against weathering and to keep your furniture looking new, treat your furniture by applying coats of a hardwood oil. How often you have to treat the furniture with oil depends on the intensity of the weather to which your furniture is exposed. The furniture has already been treated with oil prior to packing and it is recommended that the furniture be treated with oil at least once a year. Treating your furniture again before exposing it to rain will keep it looking “new” for longer and ensure a longer life.
Once eucalyptus furniture has weathered, it can be restored by sanding down the surface, cleaning it and then applying oil to prevent further weathering. To clean your furniture: mix together one tablespoon of bleach, five tablespoons of a gentle washing-up liquid and 3.8 L (6.7 pints) of water and gently scrub the mixture on the surface of the wood with a soft bristle brush. Rinse the solution off the furniture and allow it to air-dry completely. Developed for use in areas with high humidity, the furniture is not suited for storage in centrally heated areas, as that could lead to the wood drying out excessively.
If the wood of your furniture gets saturated with water and is left over an extended period without drying out, it is more likely to warp and rot. The bases of furniture legs are the most vulnerable area when it comes to water damage. If your wood furniture is kept in the grass, by the pool or on a surface that collects rain water, the legs can become saturated. Covering the bottoms of each leg with rubberised material or small sections of cedar fencing material will help protect your furniture from rotting from the bottom upwards.
