James Scott Skinner - Legendary composer of scottish fiddle music. One of the rare breed of historical performer/composers to survive into the early years of recoridng technology. This CD consists of digitally remastered original recoridngs of him playing his own stuff. Fascinating as an historical record and resource for people seeking play this music themselves, though perhaps a little hard on the modern ears when listening for relaxtion.

The last track is an un-remastered version of one of the others, so that you can understand what changes were made by the digital remastering process.

If you're a musician who already owns his music books, e.g. the Harp and Claymore, or the Scottish Fiddler - then buy this CD! If you just want to listen to the music, then buy a modern recording of a modern interpreter playing the music.

This is an excellent remastering of very historic performances by Scott Skinner, the 'Strathspey King'. It's been excellently done, and I have no criticism of the production values here. I can't give it 5 stars simply because some of the playing by the King himself is so scrappy - not all by any means ; some is very fine. I imagine we are hearing him at his best and his worst here, and I suspect he was not quite himself when one or two of these recordings were first made. But as a historical document it cannot be faulted.

Scots Master Fiddler 21 Oct 2003
By Kevin Fontenot - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
James Scott Skinner was the finest Scots fiddler to record in the early 20th century. He also holds the distinction of being one of the oldest folk fiddlers to record, being born in the 1840s along with the American Southern fiddlers Henry Gilliland and Mose Bonner. Theirs is the oldest of fiddle styles to have been recorded and demand the attention of anyone interested in folk fiddling.
Skinner recorded fairly extensively and this disc is a nice collection of his pieces (though not his complete recordings). His style is rooted in folk traditions, yet shows some classical influence. His taste in tunes is fantastic, his control and technique flawless. The sound quality is excellent for recordings of this age.
A CD that belongs in every fiddle collection and one that should attract the attention of both folk and country fiddle enthusiasts.
