Product Description

Product Description

The belief that managers and potential managers will profit from understanding the major conflicting approaches to strategy forms the point of departure for this book. Ignoring the profound differences between the various schools of thought does not enhance a manager's or student's capacity for strategic thinking. Rather, it is only when there is knowledge of the various points of view can strategists truly see the range of options open to them. Then they can find a way to choose between them, or integrate them, to be practically effective. To structure the comparison of strategy approaches, the most important conflicting strategy perspectives have been clustered together around ten key strategy issues, one key issue per chapter. Two classic readings in each chapter by key strategic thinkers further represent the two opposite positions. De Wit and Meyer's Strategy Synthesis actively challenges the educational orthodoxy to encourage students and managers to be critical, and to challenge them to be analytical, in order to facilitate creativity and unconventional thinking. In this text the authors carefully guide students and managers through the many, often conflicting, perspectives in the field of strategy, in order to help them become true strategic thinkers.

First Sentence
In a book entitled Strategy, it seems reasonable to expect Chapter 1 to begin with a clear definition of strategy that would be employed with consistency in all subsequent chapters. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book gives all round perspectives to Strategy, 11 Feb 2000
This is a different book from all other Strategic Management text. It faciliates the reader to make up their own mind. Should be on the reading list of every Business & Management course.

3.0 out of 5 stars Strategic Management University Class, 20 May 2009
I bought this book as it was suggested for a class at university. Although it covers a number of topics and has clear and different opinions from different academics etc, I did not use it very much. Chapter 4 about change management was the only chapter that I looked at and I had already been given a handout of the chapter. I found the Johnson & Scholes textbook of a similar nature much more helpful - but biffer and heavier!

Overall if interested in the subject a good book but needed for a university class.
