Fifty Strategies for Teaching English Language Learners, Fourth Edition, by Adrienne Herrell and Michael Jordan, includes a rich assortment of practical strategies aligned to TESOL standards which have been field-tested in diverse classrooms. Each strategy includes a brief explanation, step-by-step instructions on how to plan and use the strategy, and two classroom scenarios demonstrating how the strategy can be adapted for different grade levels and content areas. Herrell and Jordan have included additional language and literacy development strategies, technology strategies, and assessment strategies to support both pre-service and inservice teachers.

*New Strategies building on suggestions from professors using the third edition we have included additional language and literacy development strategies and combined some of the strategies to demonstrate how teachers can effectively sequence approaches to support learning. A total of twelve new strategies  (20+%) are included in this fourth edition.

*Reorganization of the Strategies The strategies have been reorganized based on feedback from professors using the text. In addition to the reorganization, the notable changes in this edition include the following:

*Updated Research  The theoretical overview section of this edition includes updated research and expands our review to include notable European researchers working in the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA). Updated research is cited throughout the strategy chapters as well.

*Focus on the use of assessment to ensure effective instruction  Assessment strategies are included both in the theoretical overview section and in many of the  individual strategy chapters to support pre-service and in-service teachers in understanding the importance of knowing how students learn and their current levels of functioning in order to plan effective instruction.

*Expanded emphasis on the use of technology Technology strategies are infused in many of the chapters and additional stand-alone technology strategies have been added to emphasize the appropriate use of technology to support and scaffold learning for English learners.

Review

“My students LOVE this text and it is one fo the few that they don’t sell back at the end of the term. I have worked with teachers who still have this book on their shelf five years after graduating from the program. Typically, the books end up with lots of sticky notes in them and looking worn because they are so used and loved.” ~ Kathryn M. Ciechanowski, Oregon State University

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource! 2 Jun 2011

This book with 50 strategies includes a DVD of 14 strategies demonstrated in classrooms. I bought this for a TESOL (ELL) class and to prepare for the TESOL endorsement test. The book gave me many new ideas to use in my special education resource room, as well as inclusion settings. The chapters are short and list many resources. I recommend this book for every teacher looking for differentiation techniques for your classroom.

2.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION!!! 19 April 2013

(Update 5/21/13 since I am done with class requiring this book: The DVD that came with this 4th edition seems to be the one from previous editions. So what? Well, the chapter numbers and titles do not correspond to the numbers and titles in the book. So after reading the required chapters, you have to carefully look at the DVD chapters to make sure you are viewing the correct one. Of course, this isn't a super big deal, but it's enough to complain about. Secondly, I spotted at least a dozen grammar, spelling, and format errors in the text. Some of them were quite ridiculous, and make me wonder how they can get through 4 editions without using a spell checker or proofer. Whatcha gonna do? It's the required text for a class.)

Yes, the text is good, and all those reviews should be believed. But I urge you not to waste any money on the Kindle version of this book. Unlike every other book I have downloaded to Kindle, this one does not allow you to change the font size. All you can do is zoom in on the page. But that means you have to swipe left and right constantly to read each line. It makes for a very laborious time, and actually gave me a headache reading just two pages. I have tried to contact Amazon about refunding my purchase so that I can buy the paperback version, but as we all know, you can't reach anyone at Amazon to help with this. I had to file a claim with my bank to dispute the charge. I am willing to buy the hard book from Amazon, but they won't give me a way to contact them about this. VERY FRUSTRATING, especially since this book is for a class that has already started and I am now 3 days behind on the reading. DON'T BUY THE KINDLE VERSION!!!!!!! BUY THE PAPERBACK!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars 50 Strategies is a useful tool! 21 Nov 2011

50 Strategies is an excellent tool for teachers. I am using it with future teachers, and the practical, "in the trench" techniques are proving helpful to many of the students. I appreciate a no-nonsense approach that is actually helpful and can be immediately utilized in the classroom to help teach English Learners.
