Product Description

Why would anyone strangle a humble seamstress with no known enemies? When newly-married bookseller Victor Legris is asked to solve the murder of Louise Fontaine in the abattoir district of La Villette, he is initially baffled by the case. But as the investigation progresses, Victor, along with his assistant and brother-in-law Joseph, discovers that in belle-époque Paris young girls with no money or background are as ruthlessly preyed on as ever they were …

I love books about Paris and this series is one of the best. Written by two French sisters it is evocative and atmospheric as well as giving background history in tiny bites so that you don't feel the loss of momentum in the plot. The characters are full-bodied, and the plot is tightly wound. I recommend this series to all, with the add on that it is best read from the first book.

I've read all the books in this series (this is the sixth one to be translated into English from the original French) and have been impressed with them - they are very cleverly plotted, with characters that develop throughout the series and very atmospheric detail about 1890s Paris.

This book has all the features I look for in a good mystery - characters with murky pasts, mistaken identity, a number of puzzling murders and detectives with a bit of depth (the main detective, Victor Legris, is helped/hindered by a whole cast of interesting characters).

The reason why I've given this four stars instead of five is that the translation into English feels a bit odd in places which sometimes took my attention away from the story. Also, the writers (because Claude Izner is actually two sisters) focus a lot on the detective and his setting (girlfriend, family, the bookshop he owns etc), occasionally to the detriment of the mystery story.

I agree with the other reviewer that these are best read in order (start with Murder on the Eiffel Tower) but would wholeheartedly recommend this series to anyone who loves historical murder mysteries. I'm looking forward to the next books in the series very much - I only wish my French was up to reading the originals!

I have enjoyed this series, and this book, plot and character wise, is a step up from the previous ones. Very good mystery elements, great descriptive passages and the characters are well described and realistic. I still have some doubts about the dialogue though, occasionally it appears a bit stilted and doesn't come across as natural or realistic. I haven't read the book in the original French so I don't know if this is the fault of the authors or the translator and I am quite happy to admit that many may not find this a fault at all but it didn't taint my enjoyment of the book so maybe it's just me.
