This sounds like a weird thing to say, but this is an amazing book. Not an amazing comic, because its very clear to me that its a story about people that just happens to have the pictures, instead of you conjuring it all from imagination. This book is written with genuine warmth, its characters are so terribly flawed and ultimately human, they don't always make the right decisions and you could easily believe they are the person sat next to you on the bus, or stood next to you in a queue. Its a story about the love between three people in an wholly unconventional relationship that doesn't always make sense or fit into a neat category. If the book has one message, its that life is the same, its full of bumps and surprises and you never know what is around the corner. I highly recommend this book to anyone, even if you don't read comics, you should read this. Its won various awards and such, but I didn't read it for that, and to be honest its not important, I read it on a friend's recommendation and was very glad I did.

this is a graphic novel, in a nice sized format smaller than a usual collection but larger than a usual paperback, that collects the first sixteen issues of the comic strangers in paradise.

this is a long running comic that tells a long story about two friends. francine and katchoo. friends since high school, the latter has a dark past that she's never told the former about. and the former is having relationship problems with a rather obnoxious boyfriend.

then into their life comes a nice guy called david. just as katchoo's past starts to catch up with her.

the first three issues are fairly self contained, dealing with francine's relationship. the next thirteen form a longer story about katchoo's past.

this is for adults only as it's a mature look at relationships, and there is some rather graphic violence and a few other adult themes at points. but this is the kind of comic you want to thrust into everyone's hands and to yell at them to read it, because it shows how great the format can be and how much more there is to it than just heroes in tights. this is a story about three very believable people whom you will really come to care for, and it will linger long in your mind as a result.

and the artwork is also really good, the people looking very realistic.

although this is pretty much self contained it's just the first in a series of six books about these characters, and it's good enough to make me rush out and buy them all
