5.0 out of 5 stars Pirates, zombies and swashbuckling fun in the Caribbean, 23 Mar 2008
This review is from: On Stranger Tides (Paperback)
Pirates, voodoo, the caribbean, black magic... stop me if you've heard this story.

But OST is much more than a cobbled together version of a Disney ride. Powers has created a swashbuckling epic, and has enough ideas for any three other novels. There's epic sea battles, drunken sailors, some extremely nasty villains, and a nightmarish trip to the Fountain of Youth that is worth a read all on its own.

Powers has a fantastic imagination, and the skill to get it all onto the page. I'm in awe of his talent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pirates and Voodoo, 26 Oct 2008

What's not to like about this book? It has pirates, voodoo, Blackbeard, and a man who plays with puppets. It's thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish, combining flights of absolute fantasy with the occasional bit of fact and history, tying it all into a more or less coherent narrative.

It's not perfect - for one thing the ending a little anti-climatic, and the action scenes are somewhat inelegant. On the whole though, I would be happy to recommend this to anyone who finds the premise intriguing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seminal, 12 Oct 2008

This review is from: On Stranger Tides (Paperback)
It's quite a while since I read this, so it's all the more telling that its powerful imagery has stayed with me all this time. Tim is an extremely accomplished and evocative writer, and here he is at the peak of his Powers... (!)

I dare the reader to ever think of Pirates & Rum the same way again after finishing this firecracker of a novel. And, despite enough ideas and twists to fill an entire series of a less inventive writer, the book is still, at heart, a cracking good read.

I'd also strongly recommend reading his other books, especially Drawing Down of the Dark, and Dinner at Deviant's Palace.
