Perfect thriller 29 Sep 2011

I am quite new to this genre, but i think this book pretty much encompasses everything a crime thriller should be.
The story develops well, progressing to keep the reader interested, gradually revealing more information about all the characters and the crimes. The character development of the main character Keye Street was perfect and had me hooked, wanting to find out more.

The crime aspect is gritty, brutal, graphic, and potentially perfect for a movie! I could imagine every aspect of the novel, physical aspects and characters.

I hope to see more from the author and would recommend this to anyone, new to this genre or a huge fan of crime thrillers.

This novel is about a Private Investigator called Keye Street who is assisting the police to find a serial killer. It takes place in Atlanta in America's deep south and we get a real feel for the location. Keye is an interesting character. She is Chinese/American but was adopted by a white couple so was always something of an oddity, partcularly in this part of the world. She is also a recovering alcoholic. She had used alcohol as a prop to cope with the horrors which she encounters in her job and now struggles to remain sober. As a crime story, this novel is up there with Jeffrey Deaver, Michael Connelly and others. It may be a cliche, but I really could not put this book down. I came back to it at every spare moment to read a little more. It is exciting, full of tension and suspense, with a number of red herrings along the way. The ending in particular was a complete surprise. Altogether this book was a cracking good read. If you enjoy a crime story, you will love this. I cannot recommend it enough.

On the surface this might appear to be a standard american serial killer crime novel. Yes there's the usual private eye with a drink problem and a difficult private life. Yes our private eye was once a trained FBI agent. And yes the PI left the FBI as a result of refusing to play the political game. Hence now operating as a private detective using skills, knowledge and contacts gained while serving as a bona-fide member of the Atlanta FBI. But this crime novel has an unusual, in my experience anyway, twist. That twist being that our private eye is female. And a Chinese American female detective with a university education at that.
Amanda Kyle Williams writes in the first person from her detective's point of view. and refreshingly keeps the dialogue uncluttered and unsentimental. I particularly like the observations Keye Sreet, our heroine, gives of some of the incidental aspects of living and working in Atlanta. As a skilled profiler Keye Street is invited to assist her ex colleagues in tracking down a particularly sadistic serial killer, who appears to pick his female victims with particular care. Here the plotting is no different from many other similar crime novels. But with the viewpoint coming from Keye Steet the story remains fresh and not too predicable. All in all a better than average read for a book of this genre.

A good, romping detective story which teases as it excites.

The standard we seek
This is not in any sense a 'nice' novel. It is about a serial killer with particularly nasty methods. Nor is it an innovative contribution to the serial murderer genre. Read more
