Book Description

Like the rest of the nation, the Burracombe villagers are shocked when King George the Sixth dies suddenly in 1952. But in the midst of their grief, the arrival of a stranger in the village on the very same day goes almost unnoticed, as the villagers have their own concerns...

Farmer's daughter Val needs to find a home before she can marry her sweetheart; Hilary is struggling to come to terms with her new responsibilities, and Stella is still getting to know the sister she thought she had lost during the war. While the children at the village school are as lively and inquisitive as ever, there are still conflicts and feuds among the long-standing residents of Burracombe.

Then a search for a family draws the whole village together, and more than one person is led to question their own ideas about families and what they mean.

If you enjoy a gentle, nostelgic book of village life than this is for you it follows on from "The Bells of Burracombe though you dont have to read this first.I enjoyed this book and if you have read "lilian Harry " books before then you will be familar with her style of writing and this book will not let you down. Also good for fans of The miss Read books. In short a nice book on the everyday life of a 1950`s village.

Lilian Harry is my all time favourite author, I love to read her books especially as I spent my first 20 years on the border of Devon they evoke so many memories and I now know what my Mother and Father went through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Difficult second book 8 April 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
It was with trepidation that I started the second novel of a authorthat I had great hopes for. But I had no need to worry the second novel though not perfect was still a great read.A bit more fleshing on the bones of the characters we had already been introduced to in the first novel and also new characters introduced who you hope will stay. I have already ordered Book 3 and look forward to another good read.

I haven't finished this book quite yet, I am finding it compelling reading albeit a bit repetitive and a little slow. I would buy from this author again
