Product Description

Synopsis
Brendan Cleary's poems have never been for the squeamish or faint hearted. They smack of the streets all around us. His often manic personas confront their demons, lay bare their hearts and reveal the anguish of their personal disorder in the city's terrain. " Stranger in the House" sees Cleary in the realm of the urban epiphany. Tragic, sad, but darkly comic, his poems speak for the dispossessed, the bed-sit dwellers, the losers in love. The dominant ideology is held up to question in these sketches of spoiled idealism revealing a very subtle artfulness. Uncompromising and honest, Cleary continues to strike at raw nerves and his work reminds us how poetry can be a vital and haunting force.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reflections from the margins, 1 Jul 2002
Brendan Cleary's latest book of poetry should be read by anyone who claims an interest in contemporary writing. Cleary has been publishing poetry for more than 20 years. He's built up an international reputation and his work's been featured in some unexpected places such as Mark Radcliffe's Radio One show and in adverts for ultra-cool clothes label, Comme des Garcons. His frightening visions of urban life are unsettling in the extreme, but exhibit a wily sense of humour. Don't get him wrong, these are not moral tales, they're warnings and epiphanies of city life on the margins. His work deserves a wider readership - Cleary doesn't pull punches or compromise. But he's always capable of surprises - watch out for an unexpected lyricism and don't expect easy anecdotes. These poems go further than that....they build up into a cinematic festival of images and places with a cast of chaotic characters identifiable on the streets around us. Stranger in the House, however, is itself the epitomy of order - each poem being carefully and skillfully crafted. There's space around these poems which allows the horror to live on....
