Based on a story by Louis L'Amour, this is a nice little western starring Joel McCrea as Judge Richard Thorne, who rides into town reading a law book and looking for all the world like a preacher studying the bible. He finds that the town is almost entirely owned by the Bannerman family, headed by Josiah Bannerman ( played by that excellent character actor John McIntire, who must have played in more movies than any other actor ). When it comes to light that Josiah's son Tom ( played by Kevin McCarthy ) has killed a man in cold blood and never been brought to justice, Judge Thorne arrests him and takes him to the next town for trial. Josiah and his men confront the Judge along the way, but it seems he still has a trick up his sleeve. Somewhat amused by the proceedings is Col. Buck Streeter, played by another great character actor, John Carradine.

This is another very hard to find Western, and it's one of the joys of Amazon (and other sites) that you can get films like this. I haven't seen it for 50 years or so. It's a cracking little film with Mcrea at his best. The sheer pleasure I got from seeing the British Board Film Ceensors logo come up was just the beginning. Short (66') but trim well acted, this doesn't disappoint. The quality is fine given the difficulty of finding material (from the BFI no less!)If you love Westerns and McRea, well, Go for it.

Richard Thorne (Joel McCrea) brings law and order, as a circuit judge, who comes to a small western town in the course of making his rounds. There he finds everything in town belonging to Josiah Bannerman (John McIntyre). Thorne passes a burial on his way into the town and finds that there has been a shooting, in self defence. Bannerman's spoiled son, Tom (Kevin McCarthy)had shot this man and had frightened the witnesses.
Thorne starts his enquiries and when Tom comes into town, arrests him and puts him in jail, for a fair trial. The local sheriff (Emile Meyer) helps Thorne, to a new sense of duty. Bannerman's niece Amy (Miroslava) likes Thorne.
Before the gang could break jail, Thorne moves Tom with the help of sheriff and 2 witnesses. He plans to take Tom to next town of 'cottonwood'. The gang break the jail and not finding Tom there follow him. Thorne takes a shot cut over the mountains, but the gang is waiting for them.
The DVD is only 66 minutes long, but the script is good and the director Jacques Tourneur does well to keep the story moving, with beautiful photography. The DVD has been digitally mastered from national archive, hence some distortion of colour.
Will Thorne manage to take Tom to court? Will Bannerman stop this fair trial? Will there be more killings?
Watch and ENJOY. (ENGLAND. UK)
