Richard Thorne (Joel McCrea) brings law and order, as a circuit judge, who comes to a small western town in the course of making his rounds. There he finds everything in town belonging to Josiah Bannerman (John McIntyre). Thorne passes a burial on his way into the town and finds that there has been a shooting, in self defence. Bannerman's spoiled son, Tom (Kevin McCarthy)had shot this man and had frightened the witnesses.
Thorne starts his enquiries and when Tom comes into town, arrests him and puts him in jail, for a fair trial. The local sheriff (Emile Meyer) helps Thorne, to a new sense of duty. Bannerman's niece Amy (Miroslava) likes Thorne.
Before the gang could break jail, Thorne moves Tom with the help of sheriff and 2 witnesses. He plans to take Tom to next town of 'cottonwood'. The gang break the jail and not finding Tom there follow him. Thorne takes a shot cut over the mountains, but the gang is waiting for them.
The DVD is only 66 minutes long, but the script is good and the director Jacques Tourneur does well to keep the story moving, with beautiful photography. The DVD has been digitally mastered from national archive, hence some distortion of colour.
Will Thorne manage to take Tom to court? Will Bannerman stop this fair trial? Will there be more killings?
