Andy Roberts is a researcher who happens to have an absorbing way with words, and this book is the perfect stepping off point to his myriad writings on Forteana. His exploration of a topic is so thorough you feel you have been through it with him, and you trust his verdict without doubt. The articles flow like a stories, and he strikes an excellent balance between hand-holding and overwhelming us with facts.
Buy it, but I warn you, you won't be able to stop yourself buying his other books.

A fascinating potpourri. This release of a mutant species from The Centre for Fortean Zoology Press is an anthology which is something of a mongrel and none the worse for that. Minimal cryptozoology, plenty of forteana, all to a musical influences background track. The author has spent many years involved in the wacky world of ufology and seems unscathed. We need sceptics like him. But he's not a blind debunking charaltan nor a superficial investigator. Here the cases he analyses are thorough and the resuls satisfying and as near conclusive as a fortean dare be. Andy's other great interest in psychedelic drugs spawns an account of the Grateful Dead, LSD and an experiment in telepathy from the research he did for his earlier book Albion Dreaming. Also the author shows how he is one of the most thoughtful and painstaking investigators around today in his lengthy and in-depth consideration of the Big Grey Man of ben Macdhui and similar wilderness panic situations. He also considers the landscape as described in Alan Garner's book Thursbitch. However, I was a little disappointed Andy attributes only some of the contents to their original publication sources and that quite an amount were pieces previously encountered. But if the reader is unfamiliar with this talented author then this could be described as 'the essential Andy Robert', a 'best of' or 'greatest hits' package. An entertaining cornucopia of goodies.
