Product Description

Product Description

A Strange World is an intriguing and comprehensive guide to autistic spectrum disorders presented from a new scientific perspective. Delfos's biopsychological model provides a strong theoretical analysis of the nature of autism and what problems it can cause. She offers practical advice on how to approach these problems from the various perspectives of autistic children, adolescents and adults, as well as parents and carers of autistic people. Balancing theory and practice, Delfos incorporates the findings of current research, and moves beyond. She addresses issues such as differences between men and women with autistic spectrum disorders, and the question of what is 'normal', illustrating her points with many real life examples. A Strange World is both an accessible resource for parents and an important textbook for students and professionals.

4.0 out of 5 stars If I had to pick just one book on Asperger's, this would be it, 26 April 2009
By Tisha James (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Speaking as someone with Asperger's Syndrome, if I had to pick just one book, this would be the one that overall seems to be more accurate than some of the others.

It gives examples of real people (always good)and seems to use less of the negative language when talking about people on the autistic spectrum.

This book has an all round approach from looking at the neurological aspects of predisposition or environment, leading through to specifics of behaviour and how an 'aspie' may be helped ending with a few pages on diagnostic criteria, and a list of resources such as books and internet links.

The reference list is long which suggests a lot of research into autistic spectrum disorders and I think that shows in way the book is written.
I own this book and it is always the one I suggest if anyone asks for something to read. Its more academic than general, but not too filled with difficult terminology, so suitable for all interested in Asperger's Syndrome.
