More About the Author

Upon learning to knit, Leanne Prain co-founded a stitch and bitch called Knitting and Beer in order to expand her skills while knitting in a pub. While the group has disbanded, she continues to be amazed at what can be created with two needles and a bit of yarn. In 2009 Arsenal Pulp Press published the subversive knitting book Yarn Bombing: The Art of Crochet and Knit Graffiti that she co-authored with knitting editrix Mandy Moore.

A professional graphic designer, Leanne is passionate about yarn, street art, design, handmade goods, art, publishing, antiquarian printing, writing, social media, and technology. She has a particular interest in how handmade skills can flourish and be taught in the internet age.

Leanne is a graduate of the UBC Creative Writing Program, and the Master of Publishing Program at Simon Fraser University. Born and raised in the Comox Valley; she now writes and knits in Vancouver's West End.

Interest book. As I am a textile artist it has lots of information that will take me onto other things, I think. Covers a lot of different aspects and media in brief detail so can lead to further research or trigger new ideas.

This is an intriguing thought provoking book and take on textiles. If you want to think about what you are making and why it is well worth reading. Various hints & ideas, along with in focus pieces about selected artists. Not a 'How to' book.

Smart, Inspiring Book! 24 Feb. 2015
By Kathryn Vercillo - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
If I had to pick one favorite book of 2014 it would have to be Leanne Prain’s Strange Material: Storytelling through Textiles. It looks at textiles, including a few pieces of crochet, and how various artists have transformed them into narrative-based artworks. I believe that everyone and everything has a story. I believe that there is power in sharing those stories and in re-shaping those stories. This book does that in such a unique way for a niche topic. I love it. This is a smart book that is intended to inspire the reader to tell their own story through handmaking. I believe it succeeds in this goal.
