Better buy the first 2 instead,
By Tim Crimson "Tim" (Mid Wales) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Strange and Beautiful (Audio CD)
It's a lovely edition if you aren't already into Aqualung. It is a best of the first 2 albums created for the American market when they discovered the band a bit late. Nothing wrong with it but you are missing out on some great tracks by not getting the fuller versions (both of which are 4 star).

This and Memory Man are must-haves,
By MarsBars - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Strange and Beautiful (Audio CD)
Better late than never! I discovered Aqualung through a Scrubs soundtrack. "Easier to Lie" grabbed my attention and I thought the voice sounded a bit like Thom Yorke's but the style was so sweet and hopeful, it couldn't be Radiohead... The arrangement was nuanced and layered. I immediately did more research on Aqualung and just. fell. in. love. I found myself needing to hear Brighter than Sunshine all day long. It alone is worth this purchase.
And then there's "Left Behind" which unexplainably tickles my brain. I love it to itty bitty pieces. "If I Fall" is poetic, soothing and does something to my heartbeat. "Strange and Beautiful" is hauntingly languid. I could go on... There are lots of comparisons to Keane, Coldplay, Radiohead, Death Cab for Cutie and even Muse. I don't see how this can be a bad thing. They all coexist quite nicely in my playlists. Between this album and Memory Man I have 14 favorite songs, which is extraordinary in my personal experience (usually I'll love only around 3 songs from any album). I cannot wait for their next move. 3 of 4 people found the following review helpful:

Verrrry good album,

I've listened to this album a few times and I always felt like Matt reminded me of another artist. I finally realized that he sounds like a male version of Aimee Mann, IMHO. So if you like her, chances are you'll like Aqualung.

Like Coldplay? Radiohead? Keane?,
By Anonymous guy "Big guy" - Published on Amazon.com

This is a really good CD! If you like Coldplay, Keane, and/or Radiohead check this out! It's a strong cd with a bunch of really good cuts on it. He uses some of the same sounds Coldplay uses, and writes like Keane with alot of the haunting type hooks of early Radiohead. The song that initially grabs your attention and gets you humming is Left Behind, then you gravitate to Breaking My Heart and Brighter than Sunshine, both phenomenal songs. The rest of the songs grow on you, although they aren't immediately as "accessible" as the previous three.
What can I say, I'm really impressed with this CD, and I have never heard anyone talk about it. My guess is that may be because of it's one glaring fault, it's "clonish". It sounds like Aqualung's writer listened to alot of Coldplay, Radiohead, and Keane, and set out to imitate their work. Thom Yorke can get away with his whining because you know it's really in his personality. But you have to wonder if Aqualung is copying a style more than being unique and original. Regardless, this is still a great CD even if it is a clone! |
