Le Cafard 1 July 2011
By Charles Vasey TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
This is a modern technology meets ancient horror film, a kind of French Predators. Our Legionaire chums are sent into the desert to recover a document file from a crashed plane. Swanning around the same patch of the desert are their opponents, the FLN. This is Algeria in 1960. What looks like a classic battle between two military groups (much the way Predator began) starts to involve a third force. The linkage here is something that those of us around at the time will remember (and if we don't, the director kindly gives us a whopping clue very early on) from there on in the suspense is reduced. This may be different for the younger viewer who will not spot the point until the end. The film is competently done, rather creepy, I liked the ancient horrors, but it lacked the tension of Arnie's film (and that drum-beat).

Beware The Djinn 30 Jan 2011
Format:DVD
The premise of this film centres around a squad of French soldiers sent on a mission to locate a downed plane in the North African desert(Algeria 1960ish i believe).Along the way they have to contend with the unforgiving desert and arab patrols that could attack them at any minute. If this isnt enough The Djinn are none too pleased about their prescence either.Djinn are represented in Arab and Islamic folklore and are even mentioned in the Koran and have the ability to change shape and can be good, evil or neutrally benevolent. This film can be easily compared to films such as Red Sands,Outpost,R-Point,Deathwatch and The Bunker all which see a group of soldiers losing their sanity and then their lives. The film moves along nicely and doesnt really show anything we havent seen before but what it does do it does competently. The desert looks good as does the various weapons on show,i even saw an mp40 and a Thompson.I assume many of these world war 2 weapons were left behind at the end of world war 2.The cinematography and direction is sharp and clean.Even the Djinn look convincing which is always a worry that in a film "the monsters" either look ridiculous or very fake due to the cgi,but not here. The performances of the actors varied from competent to a standout performance from Thierry Freemont.I especially liked the background of his character showing a glimpse of what happened to him in Indochina.I wish the film would have taken the time to show more of the other characters background if only to provide us with empathy for them.I also believe that the character of the cameraman was miscast.I have seen him before in The Undercover War and found a similar performance from him there(understated and not strong enough to carry a film). With all that said it is a nice little film albeit one that has been done before and i didnt feel like i had wasted any time watching it.The only real complaint for me and this is just my own personal view is that they could have cut a couple of minutes from the end.I would have ended it just as the soldier was leaving with the attache case thus leaving us to use our own judgement and imagination as to what was in the case. But this is only a small gripe.Overall a film worth watching but one that wont leave any lasting impression.

The first reviewer pretty much hits the nail on the head. A band of French soldiers are sent into the desert to retrieve an item of great importance from a downed plane (what is in the case is revealed at the end of the film but has no relevance during the film). Eventually they get lost due to sandstorms and take refuge in a fortress whilst being hunted by algerian soldiers. They are also being stalked by demons of the desert (djinn) which to be honest, have no real impact on the film what so ever. The supernatural element of the film could almost be removed entirely as its impact is minimal. The soldiers start going mad and their numbers dwindle.....the end. The film could have been so much better but is just another bland and forgettable affair. A lot of what happens is never explained such as why one of the platoon can see the djinn for example. All the characters bar one (the one tortured in indochina) are instantly forgettable and very bland. Like other war/horror films the formula is basically the same but the location is different but films such as "the keep" and "outpost" etc actually do something with the supernatural element of the film...it doesn't happen here. Sure the djinn show up from time to time but don't actually do anything of note apart from possess their victims which sows the element of madness but its all done in such a poor fashion that they may have well been edited out of the film! The most recognizable actors in the film (Cyril Raffaelli and Said Taghmaoui have little impact either). Overall a pretty bland flick which missed out on a great opportunity.
