Straight Time is the film version of the gritty, cult novel "No Beast So Fierce" by author Ed Bunker. The novel has been acclaimed by the likes of Quentin Tarrantino (who got Ed bunker to play Mr Blue in reservoir Dogs) and Michael Mann (who asked his actors to read the novel while filming Heat). The film is a faithfull treatment of the book, and Dustin Hoffman is excellent as the ex-con trying to go on the straight and narrow after spending many years inside. The story is of course based on the true life experiences of Bunker, and Hoffman visited Bunker in jail before the film was made. An atmospheric and moving film, and in my view, an underated classic. Oh yes, Bunker makes a cameo appearance too!
