More About the Author

Mary S. Lovell was an accountant and company director until she began writing in 1980 following a serious riding accident which left her temporarily disabled. Now an internationally acclaimed biographer, she has written best selling biographies of Beryl Markham, Amelia Earhart, Cynthia Pack, Jane Digby, Sir Richard and Isabel Burton, the Mitford sisters and Bess of Hardwick. Her latest biography is a family saga of the Churchills. Her books have been translated into foreign language editions, in French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Danish and Finnish. Her biography of Amelia Earhart was made into a movie starring Hilary Swank and Richard Gere in 2010, and she has four further titles optioned for film treatments. Until 2011 she led reader groups interested in Jane Digby around Syria every year, to follow in the exciting footsteps of this favourite subject of hers. She has recently completed promotional tours in the USA and UK, and is now working on the final chapters of 'the Riviera Set'.

I thought this would be a boring read, but it was quite the contrary.
What a remarkable woman she was. I found this book gave a good insight into a bygone age of how the privliged class lived. I think there's a lot of lessons in there somewhere. Yes, it really was an unreal world for the titled and privileged few, but having read similar books of the rich and titled in an eara of Empire, I think what money, rank and privilege gave them, they lost out on the bigger picture of life. For all they had, none of them seemed contended or happy, and NEVER satisfied.Definitely worth a read.

The Life of Beryl Markham was a brilliant read. I found her life story fascinating. As I had read the life story of Denis Finch Hatton & Karen Blixen I felt I had to read Beryl Markham's. What a life and what an extraordinary woman. It is very well written by Mary LovellI.

I enjoyed this book (although towards the end it had rather a lot of detail about horse breeding). But it was a good read and did capture the character of Beryl Markham very well - I felt I really had a good idea of her life and times by the end of it.

This biography compliments and adds greatly to Beryl Markham's wonderful "West With The Night". Both are must reads. The amazing reprint history of both (particularly the latter) says it all.
